SetGlobal not functioning? Dialog repeats

My current install of BG2 has a recurring annoying issue; SetGlobal doesn't seem to be working for dialog, with the result that dialogs/banter that use SetGlobal keep repeating over and over again. I've checked with NI and Shadow keeper, and I can see that the PC or NPC that fires off the dialog doesn't have the local variable stored in their CRE file - in fact Globals are often entirely missing from the game file when viewed with NI. Also when I check in-game using CluaConsole's GetGlobal function it confirms this. Since there is no variable stored, the dialog starts over and over again as if the variable is 0, rather than 1 or 2 or whatever SetGlobal SHOULD be setting the variable to in order to keep the dialog from starting up again.

 

Any help with this would be appreciated; I've checked both trigger.ids and actions.ids and they seem ok, though I'm not 100% sure.

Sounds like a bug in ToBEx that had to do with the fix to allow for instant global setting in dialogue, but it's been fixed several versions ago.

 

You can try disabling ToBEx's features in TobEx_ini/TobExCore.ini and TobEx_ini/TobExTweak.ini, and see it anything will change.

What exactly was the bug? The threads I've checked in the ToBEx forums seem to talk about a different kind of dialog bug.

It's the other way around. The old versions of TobEx set the globals straight away, meaning that dialogues that relied on globals not being set didn't fire the right triggers, like in Carson's.

 

The issue with the vanilla game is that you don't set globals during dialogue that you will use again in the same dialogue session. I'd like to see if this is the case in your dialogue, ithildurnew. Would you please post the dialogue (you can traify it if you don't want us to read the actual strings).

Help from the man himself! Do you want the actual dlg files, or the text posted? So far the NPCs that have been effected with looping dialog are Imoen (in Irenicus' dungeon), Minsc, Yoshimo, Anomen, Aerie, one of the Dryads in Irenicus' dungeon... in nearly every case (the dryad might've been an exception, if I recall I finally got her to respond to the presence of the Genie's flask in my inventory, took several retries at initiating conversation with her) checking for stored global variable (i.e. BAERIE3) on the NPC yielded result of 'does not exist', and manually setting the variable (to 1 usually) did the trick and ended the loop.

 

some examples of dialog that kept repeating:

 

from BAERIE.dlg: "Look, Anomen! The sun is rising..." (looks for Global baerie3 locally stored on .cre. If other conditions are met and baerie3 is 0 dialog fires, then is supposed to set the global to 1)

 

from ImoenJ.dlg: "Jaheira... I want to say how sorry I am about Khalid..." (looks for Global ImoenKhalid locally stored on .cre. If other conditions are met and ImoenKhalid is 0 dialog fires, then is supposed to set the global to 1)

 

from BYoshim.dlg: "Young Anomen, a samurai of the west, roaming ..." etc (looks for Global byoshimo6 locally stored on .cre. If other conditions are met and byoshimo6 is 0 dialog fires, then is supposed to set the global to 1)

Will give it a try; I've also been noticing that the game will periodicly freeze up for several seconds at a time. It's likely not graphics related as it happens even in small areas with very little visual content, and it happens even when the party is standing still so it's not pathfinding; I also have the 'ai' button turned off so it's not combat/party scripts.

 

I'm starting to see Globals that aren't stored locally not showing up as well, which will eventually prove game breaking since plots/events won't progress forward. i.e. right now I just got done talking to Zzar, but the global "TalkedToLyros" is missing from the game, which seems to be preventing Rylock from spawning, which effectively keeps the Harper quest from advancing unless I manually put it in via CluaConsole.

 

Between the occasional freezing and the glitches with globals, I'm starting to wonder if there's something that's occasionally interfering with the game engine's updates of globals. What's odd is that i's just some of the globals that are missing/not updating; others seem fine. i.e. the global LyrosJob is at 1, which is what it should be after talking to Zzar and agreeing to accept his 'request', but 'TalkedToLyros' which should've been set to 1 by the same dialog (actually earlier on than 'LyrosJob') is missing.

 

There's a file/mod out there that lets one see what scripts are currently running in a game, isn't there? A link to that would be helpful here.

With TobEx enabled in your game, does the Zzar example with global "TalkedToLyros" reproducible? I would need a good test case that I can reproduce myself to find out what the problem is.

Seems like it. Tried two saves, both times failed to setglobal TalkedToLyros to 1/Rylock didn't spawn. With TobEx disabled, Rylock spawned as soon as I finished talking to Zzar and accepting the job, as he should with TalkedToLyros at 1.
