  1. Crucible passed a nice milestone: the last boss style fight has been scripted and in a test worthy state. I need to write dialogue for 4 NPCs, possibly more, then do touch ups to add traps, add journal entries, and add map notes. Then lots of more thorough testing and incorporate feedback.

    Feedback received so far has been heard with changes already implemented or slated to be added. Thank you so much to those testing this, your effort is greatly appreciated.

    On a fun note, Crucible will feature a completely new starting area (existing starting area will just be the second area the player enters). The new starting area is larger than the Brynnlaw map, and it will take me some time to go through and populate.

    The fact remains that this is taking work away from voice actors (original or not), so damage is being done regardless of any jurisdiction's opinion or actual enforcement. It might be a negligible revenue stream, but it is one.

    Replica Studios is a pay to use service that has hired it's own voice actors to generate their AI models. For creating net new characters with their own unique voices, I would disagree this is taking work away from voice actors as I am paying them through their licensing agreement through Replica.

    Well we have been able to rewrite and change the story and make the characters do and say what ever we want and we have been able to add our own voice acting to replace the original voice actor as well as replace the art for that character with darth vader's and change the rules of the D&D system and so on a so forth for 20 years now.  Neverwinter in Baldur's Gate literally takes a story from another game and all of it's characters and VA voices and imports it into the infinity engine with art from pillars of eternity and it all uses the 2nd edition D&D system with consent from nobody.  You guys are worried about a digital tool that allows you to more accurately match a voice actor?  lol, all you have to do is state that the original VA has nothing to do with your mod and that it's a fanfiction released for free like every other mod for the last two decades which is of course, common sense.  They are not going to just come and shut down sites that host the mod and put some guy in jail out of the blue for making a silly video game mod.  If they had a problem with it (which they wont), They will tell you that they have a problem with it and threaten action against you before anything happens.  They will only do that if you are interfering with their current business plans.

    Regarding steams agreement with AI,   I would think that it would be common sense that they couldn't get away with using Brad Pitt's voice for their main character without his consent but as mod makers we are not bound by those rules because we don't represent an official company with any authority and we are not making any claims that the character is acted by Brad Pitt and we are not making money off of it.  I can make Mazzy Fenton a sex obsessed freak that eats corpses and give her a portrait that looks like Darth Vader and a voice actor that sounds like Brad Pitt.  Nobody is going to do squat.  If they forced it to be taken down people would just reupload it all over the net like they always do and it would never go away.  Host it on github if you are worried about them coming after Gibberlings3. They can't stop us from modding our own products how we want to and they can't stop it from being uploaded and shared across the net for all time.  They are literally not capable of stopping us from doing it no matter how many people they try to sue for money that they will never be paid.

    The point I was trying to make about steam is that AI is not the devil and it creates art based off of images of the real world just like humans do.  It does it more quickly and sometimes with more complexity but it has it's own flaws as well.  As long as the art that is being used for assets does not include visual pieces from another artist it is not a problem.  One way to avoid that is to train it using real world photos and then feed it pictures of your game graphics so that it uses ONLY reality and your studios art as a point for reference for training.  I was posting AI trained and upscaled backdrops from Baldur's Gate on Beamdog's forum years ago and nobody cared.  I was even talking with people from their team and they were watching the thread at the time.  With voice acting,  As I said before, you can't own a voice.  Two people can sound the same and you can't bring an artist to court because he happens to sound like Brad Pitt.  If they want to train an AI to mimic some "nobodies" voice that sounds like Brad Pitt then they don't need Brad Pitt's consent because it's not his voice they are copying.  Rest assured, once the actors of these iconic characters die, they will still be using new actors and digital tools to continue telling stories about super man, spider man and Darth Vader long after we have both kicked the bucket.  A corporation who covers it's back might contact the estate of the original actor just to avoid the parasites but game studios and especially mod makers are going to find loop holes like the one I just mentioned above that they can't do anything about. They can't even prove that you were trying to mimic the original VA with AI.  All you have to do is say that is not what you were doing.  You can put whatever voice you want in there.  I could do a convincing Gollum impersonation in place of Irenicus voice right now and I could have done it 10 years ago...nothing would happen and they can't prove that I was trying to impersonate Gollum.  I could say I heard some kid in school that sounded like that and decided to make it sound that way.  I could claim I have never even seen lord of the rings and they can't prove it no matter how many millions of dollars they spend on lawyers.  Yep I just dreamed it up.  No court is dumb enough to come after random joes because they have no chance of getting anything out of it.

    I think this falls flat entirely in implementation. Are you personally going to create a mod using AI voices derived from existing voice actors and their work or are you trying to convince modders to do this for you? If relying on convincing existing modders to do this, what skin in the game do you have? How much are you personally going to finance, right now, to incoming legal issues these modders are likely to face? You can 100% be in the legal right and get crushed in legal expenses to where you can't exonerate yourself in court. How much are you personally willing to assist a modder to do this given how vocal you are they should use ai to copy existing voice actors work?

  4. Jennifer Hale (Mazzy Fenton, Fem Shep, and a host of other memorable characters) has spoken out against it.

    If you want to make a mod using ai to add Edwin's voice to more dialog, self host it, and be willing to be the legal case study for this, then that's your prerogative.

    I think we are left with legally murky water and the express desire from some in that community to not do this action. I don't really need more than that. I believe any discussion on this topic is more philosophical at this point.

  5. I am not an attorney, but I don't think case law has been established here to say whether or not you can use ai to copy Edwin's voice (I'm sure @CamDawg would hate even more lines from Edwin). As such, big corporations could legally be in the right to protect their voice actors and bleed out anyone using ai to copy their voices. Legal stuff aside, I think some of the voice actors who worked on these games have come out directly against using their likeness without permission. That's enough for me right there.

  6. I disagree with your points @BobT. There is a vast difference between using a paid service that has its own ai voice actors and algorithms to generate voices (which is what I do) and what you are suggesting which would involve feeding an existing voice actor's work into an ai algorithm to generate new lines with that actor's voice. As I've said before, I view it as a clear distinction between the two, and I will not use AI to copy an existing voice actor.

    I personally went through two lawsuits last year (I initiated) and both had favorable results. I also grew up in a home with a big attorney father. In my personal experience, even though you may legally be right, its not worth it being the case study for these things. I would also bet these voice actors and their respective agencies have vastly deeper pockets than you, so even if you are legally right, do you have the funds to go through litigation and prove it? Attorney's fees are not cheap and the big agencies can drag it on and bleed you out. If you somehow come out ahead you still have to suffer the stress, lawyer expenses, and time sink to prove your point (and I'm not sure the law in these types of cases but I doubt you'd be able to recoup your legal expenses).

  7. As the guy literally using AI created voices for an upcoming mod, I'm personally not comfortable from an ethical standpoint of taking an existing voice actor's voice and mimicking it to have them voice something of my creation. I'm not willing to get even close to the court of law on this one either as it is a fresh discussion for people way beyond any of us to hash out from a big picture standpoint. I think Cam said it best: voice actors have expressed their opinion against AI mimicking their voices, and that's good enough for me to honor their request in my work.

  8. I'm not sure how you add HLAs into BG as I haven't checked, but IWDEE already has the prerequisite lu_xxx.2da tables present. I haven't checked, but all that may need to be done is change the prerequisite GAME_IS to include iwdee as all that's needed to add HLAs into IWDEE is a ui that allows for it (Lefreut) and then adding the below:

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    // Import                                                                //
    ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    COPY ~skills-and-abilities/2da/lunumab.2da~ ~override~ // HLA Progression

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    //  Show HLA Names                                                       //
    ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    COPY_EXISTING ~SPCL904.SPL~ ~override~ // Resist Magic
      SAY NAME1 @8037
      SAY NAME2 @8037

    COPY_EXISTING ~SPCL908.SPL~ ~override~ // Warcry
      SAY NAME1 @8038
      SAY NAME2 @8038

    I think what @Mistercurious is getting at, is if you update the hla tables for IWDEE with the new ToF HLAs, then a mod like mine can flip the switch (per se) and then allow players to use them.

    Great mod but why are Bastard Swords still forgotten😀 . Only 1  is available pre Under Dark  . You already get  2 decent Bastard Swords in the UD ( Bleeder and Seering).  Would have been nice to get a decent +2 or +3 pre UD early SoA

    Streamer Dav?

    You're right though regarding frequency. I think I have a +2 I introduce in BGEE and I can find a place for it pre-underdark. The other thing is I'm very used to my skills and abilities prof overhaul (and others do this) that combined bastard swords and long swords together into a single prof.

    Using ai to make voicelines for original characters? Am I understanding your post right? I'm curious.

    Yes, using AI voices for characters I created or took from lore who are not previously seen in this game or anything other than footnotes.

    6 minutes ago, Thacobell said:

    I'm curious. What do you see as the benefit to this versus sourcing voice work from the community? And is the ai you're using pulling samples indiscriminately or is it an algorithim made up of pieces that are being pullled with consent from the original artists? There's so many variables at play here.

    Right now I have a dozen voiced characters ranging from men, women, demons, and angels with more on the way. I don't know if this community has a dozen people with the range I am looking for. I do not have the studio equipment to properly record, the funds for proper payment, or the time as a two person mod to do full on voice production and editing. Replica Studios allows me to pick one of their voice actors, pick the emotional style the actor is trying to convey, and then record the lines that I can edit in real time. It allows me flexibility and real time adjustment that would not be timely nor realistic with a real voice actor. I'd encourage you to look at Replica Studios to assist you in gaining a better understanding for how their services work.

  12. The Crucible mod is going to be wading into the use of AI Voices discussion, and I've paid to use ai software from Replica Studios. First time I've personally put money down to generate a free mod, but I think it will better the mod. Of note, I have already generated 115 fully voiced lines of dialog for various net new characters the player will interact with. I estimate there will be close to 200 fully voiced lines of dialog when it is completed. Any existing character that already has voice work (e.g. Sarevok, Imoen, etc.) will be mute in their interjections as I do view it as an ethical concern to mirror the work of an existing voice actor to voice a character they are behind. I did tweet out to the original voice actor for Sarevok to see what it would take, but I doubt I will get a response as I have no people to reach out to his people to set something up.

    Thanks for the update!

    Meanwhile a minor note regarding ToF compatibility -

    Revised Proficiencies component says that it is incompatible with ToF revised races and ToF revised profs... But it actually checks for ToF component 60100 - Low-level HLAs / Feats system.

    So either check of the description is wrong )

    Good catch! I accidentally listed the races as 60100 and will get that corrected shortly.

    Hi @morpheus562 I've just noticed in last 24 hours (real time) that in my latest play through it does look like this girdle is activating via the scripts, however its doing so like Stoneskin/Iron Skins, and healing, etc, as soon as you complete a rest, rather than when buffing is initiated. So that looks good enough 🙂 - although I can see an argument both for having it initiate as a conscious buff (N or B hotkey) and/or as current behaviour (i.e. automatically as soon as able/available like stoneskin). Is this maybe a side effect of another change you made for something else or perhaps you have in fact actioned it already in a recent change (I do have a feeling we may have briefly discussed this a while ago so maybe you did consciously incorporate it into some work and have since forgotten about it)?

    This is my first playthrough with your latest update v12.5 (my prior playthrough back about November was still with v12.1 and I didn't consciously notice this behaviour at that time), just FWIW.

    Anyway just wanted to update you so you didn't waste time redoing something you might have already addressed.

    No worries. Right now all focus is on the Crucible, but I'd have checked to ensure it wasn't already added. Sounds about right that I added the belt in that way since it is a really long lasting use item.
