is not understandable as giving an affirmative response to Viconia

It is not an affirmative response. It is a negatory response, and that means the german translators got it wrong

  2. Joke getting is actually an important part of a translator's job!

One thing is for sure, though, when translated this line of dialogue seems completely off (to me, Salk and the whole crew behind CorrectfrBG2EE) given the answer Viconia give.

I understand, I definitely worked with enough ESL ppl in my life so far to realize that sometimes a dialogue feels off. But in this case, I feel like the reason for the vibe is because the original dialogue... is bad?

It's not incongruent, which is why I don't believe it warrants fixes. It is simply bad. The writers wanted to have their cake and eat it too, and somehow keep the thing where you can insult Viconia on every opportunity because she's a Bad Bitch you can be Mean to, but also, she needs to be horny and desperate for Charname. And it sucks, it's embarassingly trite writing when you look at this from a perspective of a human being in the year of our lord 2022, rather than a fantasy writer in, uh, 1999..

But it's perfectly in line with itself.

  3. I think what bears repeating is that Viconia is kinda of a huge bitch, because even despite her personal tribulations, she's written to be as a member of a race whose daily greetings are "fuck you hail spider satan", and you can spend the entire romance saying absurdly mean stuff to her. She's fine with it.

Then how do you explain she reacts to the lesser negative one but not the very negative one?

    Lesser negative:

@27516  = ~I am not interested in laying with you, Viconia.~

@28057  = ~I... have a need, <CHARNAME>. A need that must be fulfilled... I must feel your strength within me and around me.~

@27525  = ~Do not deny me this, <CHARNAME>... I offer to you all the pleasures that a drow woman may bestow if you but hold me this night.~

    Very negative:

    @27512  = ~I can think of nothing less appealing.~

@27518  = ~Let me partake of you, <CHARNAME>, drink of your courage this night. See what a drow female may offer: I shall inflame your passions, your senses... Stay with me.~

Because they convey a different meaning.

27512 = "i do not find you appealing" -> 27518 = "i am actually a very sexy female and maybe i WILL make you find me appealing wink wink"

27516 = "i am not interested in having sexual relationships with you" -> 28057+27525 = "listen, charname, i NEED to fuck, and you are really mean by saying no 😕 "

(this is, by the way, certified freak behavior: if your partner does not respect your boundaries, it's a red flag and you should at least seriously discuss this. A lot of Viconia's romance is EXTREMELY late 90s "what nerds think being with a dommy mommy is like" by any human standard.)

  5. @Jazira @Salk I feel like you guys are extremely missing the forest for the trees regarding that Viconia exchange? You have three options, one very negative, one neutral (please, for the love of god, not wanting to have sex with someone desperately crawling into your bed to seek comfort after telling you about their brother is NOT a negative behavior), one positive already. It's not exactly new or outside of Viconia's character to disregard barbs pointed at her when she wants something from you.

The text is unambigouous and perfectly understandable.

There are only 3 occurrences of the word "Malaaq" in BG2:EE (@34099, @34701 and @47515), two journal entry and an item description. At no time did he ever mention his name directly to charname, so how could charname know his name?

From the item description, duh. 😛

SHS denied too. And Neh't isn't corporeal ... not at first. I could use  GitHub I suppose, just not on the G3 or anything.  As upsetting as it is, cause I feel like people don't know about him,  it's fine. My son is going to help me setup a forum/hosting site  for Neh't.  I will always have a special place in my heart for Solaufein.  If it wasn't for him and Berelinde, I would have given up before I started and would have never made any mods.  It is what it is,  all of this happened over 10 years ago and I  respect the decisions made to reject hosting him.  Neh'taniel is the best mod I ever wrote and I'm very proud of how he turned out.

    Did u know:

Tempest, who has been making these decisions, went on a big fun posting spree on SA about how dating an undead such as a wraith is the most evil necrophilia imaginable

Guest Jeremias, I’ve already said that I agree with changing the name of the spell, given what it does. Also, I appreciate that you expressed yourself politely, and I don’t want to be unkind. With that said, I am also a native English speaker, and I’m sorry to say that your comments about the usage of the word “holocaust” are totally inaccurate. Please make sure that you have your facts about the usage of a word right before asking for it to be changed because you're sure it’s offensive. Freedom of expression is a human right, and freedom of speech is a fundamental pillar of liberal democracy, whereas the freedom to not be offended is neither of those things.

There are five posts earlier in the thread that mention that the word in question is used in other contexts, including the one immediately above your post. More importantly, if a word is present in dictionaries, and it isn’t identified as archaic, then it’s probably a bit of a stretch for anyone to argue that the word is “not really one that's ever used”, unless of course the argument originates with a professional in the field of linguistics. This applies all the more when dealing with English words because the language is so widespread - it’s an official language and primary language or lingua franca in countries on every single continent (not counting Antarctica).

Here are three reputable mainstream sources published within the last month alone that refer to "nuclear holocaust": in America (Harper's Bazaar), in Britain (The Times), and in Canada (The Globe and Mail). I found them in a few minutes on the first couple of pages of a google search. A more thorough search would undoubtedly have found many more examples from similar sources, even if searching only for material from this year. In public discourse relating to nuclear weapons, it's very common to refer to nuclear holocaust.

I challenged myself to think of another plausible use for the word, then find some relatively recent examples in reputable mainstream sources, all within five minutes. I managed it: wildfires are still described as a holocaust. Here are two examples from America: in the Los Angeles Times, in 2020, and in a speech by President Bush, in 2003. There's also fiction to consider, and I can't imagine what standard of proof is necessary to declare that a word is no longer used in fiction. Even if the word "holocaust" did pass out of normal usage, it would remain in dictionaries but be identified as archaic. What genre of fiction often uses archaic wording? Fantasy. Like Baldur’s Gate.

Quoting this for posterity so that if you ever decide to become a decent human person you won’t be able to pretend you never wrote this vile word vomit.

I will take this under consideration, mostly out of respect for Jastey.

*HOWEVER* - I have strong reservations about doing so.  It's used in other games.  First one that comes to mind: Phantasy Star 4.  One of the bosses (Zio, if I remember correctly), has an attack named holocaust.   And that games is a good bit older than this one.

I could go into much greater detail about why I have such reservations, but that would take this thread into a political miasma that imo, has no place in a gaming forum.

I'll just say this and leave it at that: I am of Polish decent from immigrants who fled a certain horrific event in europe a long time ago.

    ****Edit****

After more ponderance on this, here's what I would like to do:

@jastey - Out of my respect and gratitude for you, if you could kindly come up with a replacement name for this spell, I will implement it in the next update.

Is the username you chose some sort of ironic joke?

Modder at G3 is anyone who the admins noticed to mod. You have access to a hidden modder forum with helpful ressources like templates and can post posts in the Infinity Engine Modding News forum where the newsfeed about modding updates origins from. You also have more PM and file attachment space afaik. I don't think we have a "G3 modder" group with modders whos mods are actually officially hosted here.

Yes, we are still discussing whether we'll call this user group "Little Troll Club", "Look Who's Posting", or "Noober's Friends". And yes, that was a joke.

    "Members 8=D"

That happens because the ones that ducked, were invisible as their replies are that, that only the visible replies become the non-duck ones.

Then, of the few picture replies of late, I only see one to be a duck one, the others are actually not ducks, but a mallard, which dispite being sometimes called a wild duck, has nothing to do with the domestic duck... well except the one might have been the other ones, but no so any longer. Yes, they are not different races, but there's a lot of breeds, which usually don't breed with one another.

Okay I’m sorry I can cede that you sometimes have insights about baldur’s gate modding but you don’t know shit about animals, taxonomy, nor animal husbandry. It’s insane, and at best, very stupid, to claim that only domesticated ducks are ducks

On a lighter note, thinking about an NPC wrote for people in their 30s using me as an example made me laugh.

    - Constant conflict with chatty npcs and barbarians/berserker: they cause me headaches with talking and shouting.

    - Same true for any spell caster with their fancy tricks with intense lights and sounds. Very pissed off by chromatic sphere, being colourblind.

    - If lawful, complains with PCs for excessive backtracking: they waste time and should have took a more rational course of action, better planning.

    - Scripted constant waste of healing potions or healing spell to address chronic cervical/back pain or a penalty on carry weight.

    - Complain on shop prices: when I was a child for the same price of an hide armor I would have got a shortsword and a dagger too! Damned iron crisis! And the armor woul have been better quality.

    - Top quality relations with high moving silently chars expecially in the mornings. And vampires.

    - Bonus casting speed on Silence, Sleep and similar spells.

Basically... It would be a nearly unhelpful companion :)

This is what Keldorn should be like, really

@Thacobell That scene is just a little bit over the top in stupidity. Talk about a franchise becoming a parody of itself.

Also, I'm pretty sure you know what he means when he says the movie is politically correct. It pushes the strong woman theme, even though women have half the upper body strength as men on average. Baldur's Gate is guilty of this in a less obnoxious way. The day women play in the NFL is the day female action heroes become believable.

    Jesus christ.

    Hello!

A simple question. Is it possible to add new tokens to the classic game, just like BG:EE did? I would have liked something like <CLASS> and  <PRO_CLASS>, for instance...

Hi! This is indeed possible, because the classic BG2 engine has actions 247 SetToken(S:Token*,I:STRREF*), and 248 SetTokenObject(S:Token*,O:Object*).

Those tokens are not saved between games though, so you'd have to run those actions in the script of a creature using them on a load. Also, the tokens don't have their values updated dynamically, just by script, so it's not exactly like <GABBER>.
