Improved Balduran's Isle

SCS's Improved Balduran's Isle component (minor spoiler in the link) claims to make Mendas a L10 mage and Baresh a L12 fighter. Mendas would need to be at least L15 to justify his base HP, and his level is given as 20. Also he is Baresh's "master" so it'd make sense he'd be higher level. Any reason for the nerf? More to the point though, all I can tell this component does to Mendas is some (possibly redundant) assignment of sound clips. It doesn't give him any spells or scripts to cast them, unless SCS is doing this in the background somehow (and I can't see that it is). Edit: I see you're overwriting _mendas3.cre with your own version. Being as how I want to patch this cre and SCS is usually installed after other mods, this is kind of inconvenient :).

 

As for Baresh, everything about his animation, class, saving throws etc. points to him being a cleric. He only lacks the actual spells and scripts to cast them (as Mendas does if he's to be a mage). Though it might seem a bit odd for a cleric to be a lycanthrope, I don't know if there's any rules against it. So I'm wondering why the change to fighter.

A lycanthrope in human form *is* a cleric, salesman or another class. From Monsters of Faerun, p. 91:

Becoming a lycanthrope does not change a character's favored class.
It goes on to say they can be clerics or even paladins, though the latter would likely "fall" due to alignment change.

Well, in the original game Mendas never engages in combat of any sort without shapeshifting (which as you know replaces his CRE file completely). So I'm treating any actual statistics in _mendas3.cre as basically irrelevant.

 

As for the specific choices for Mendas's and Baresh's level: they're made according to my usual fairly unsystematic hunch as to what the right level of challenge for a party returning from Balduran's Isle should be. I don't really mind that Mendas's level is lower than Baresh's (though I can't now recall why I did it this way around) because he's a lot tougher in werewolf form - maybe he's putting his XP into that form. (There is so far as I know no relevant rule set for this in 2nd edition AD&D).

But in any case, I don't think tactically it would work: clerics, unlike mages, don't have any very effective way of shielding themselves from harm, so in the absence of any further allies he'll just get hacked up rather than getting any spells off.

 

I overwrote Mendas rather than patching because since it's a from-scratch creature rewrite, patching seemed more hassle than it's worth, especially as he has to be given spells. In hindsight that was probably a mistake on compatibility grounds. It also reflects the fact that SCS was mostly written about 2 years ago (it took me a year to get around to releasing it) and the WEIDU state of the art at the time made patching spellcasters a lot more painful than it is now...

 

What do you want to do to him, out of curiosity? I'm probably doing a new version of SCS in a few weeks time and I can go to a patched version then.

A 12th level cleric could get Blade Barrier and Physical Mirror. These are at least on a par with similar mage defensive spells. Plus clerics have, well, armour :). And a couple Animate Deads will provide an effective meat shield so the casters can fire off more spells.

I've fixed up (or tweaked as the case may be) various CREs in TotSC, and in this case I made Baresh a L12 cleric and Mendas a L15 mage as their stats seem to suggest. Even with spells, these two shouldn't be that much of a challenge for a full party this late in the game. I fix a few other things to be more in line with the rules, like THAC0, XP values, etc. Of course, it only occurred to me after the fact that maybe I should check SCS to make sure it's not overwriting my changes :). I do agree with most of what SCS has done here, including letting them stay human longer.
I'm probably doing a new version of SCS in a few weeks time and I can go to a patched version then.
Well, I might be able to save you some trouble there then, since I've already written most of the patching code for these CREs :).

Here's the patching code that gives Baresh and Mendas the spells they should have for their classes and makes a few other corrections. I've checked out this installs correctly as a mini-mod but I haven't playtested it (heh, that would be silly :)). It also has platform independent (Tutu/BGT) code.

 

I've just used default BG2 scripts and the spells available in them. I realise this may not be as "smart" as SCS's scripting, but it should suffice for these CREs. The main things missing would be potion quaffing and inter-spell weapon use, but that might be overkill for these guys (then again, it might not).

 

In sum, they get the following spells (as per the progression tables):

You're welcome to the code, or any derivation of it. I have a lot of changes of this nature, mainly aimed at making creatures more consistent (particularly spellcasters and the spells they should have). The problem is not all the changes are compatible with SCS, despite my best efforts to make them so (mainly due to SCS's overwriting of CREs and scripts). Since you probably don't want to clutter up a fairly stable SCS with a bunch of new, untested code, I'll probably stuff my changes in the mods I'm working on, or perhaps in a new mod.

Thinking again about Baresh, I agree that Blade Barrier + Physical Mirror is a pretty good combat shield (though it doesn't bring spell protection) but I don't use Blade Barrier in TUTU because it breaks my BG1-resources-only rule. (To be fair, I break it in a couple of other places with clerics and druids to give them a chance to survive, but that's about making existing clerics viable, not adding new ones).

 

I don't think it's a deep matter, though - more a matter of taste. I suggest that your minimod installs after SCS, that's probably the easiest way to overwrite Baresh as a cleric. If you do that, you might also want to wipe any existing spells that Mendas has before adding your own.

I'm curious to know what the final deciscion on the levels of these two guys was.

 

I've just returned from Balduran's Isle and Mendas is throwing about chain contingencies, horrid wiltings, etc. Bit steep for a 7th level party! Also, when his friend Baresh transforms into a Loup Garou, he keeps "exploding" repeatedly, leading to a group of about 8-9 Loup Garous clustered in the same spot. Any ideas on what might be wrong? I have done some install changes, though that was long before going to werewolf Isle.
