Banters firing when they shouldn't

kthxbye

Recommended Posts

Hi @ all!

I've just reinstalled BG1&2 on a newly installed Win7 Ultimate RC machine. The game runs fine and had no problems except for banters firing when they shouldn't.

I explain: I enter the tutorial house in candlekeep (the one the gatewarden opens for you) and as usual the five NPCs join. As soon as they join, they started to fire a banter each asking why I was wasting my time in idle chatter. Four out of five had this banter, the last one didn't I think because I paused the game and disabled the AI (using the "lantern").

I then advanced to the FAI with the AI disabled, killed Tarnesh, kicked out of party some NPCs (Xzar, Montaron and Eldoth, then joined and kicked Jaheira and Khalid). On the way to Beregost I inadvertitely clicked on the lantern and as soon as the AI was again on, Imoen fired the banter she's supposed to have when I kick her out of the party, but she remained in the party. I forced a banter with her (by talking to her) and she had the banter she's supposed to have when you talk to her after you kicked her out (she asked to join again). Told her to come with me (even if she's still in the party) and forced another talk, this time I had the right banter.

I think it could be related to this mod since people in the tutorial house isn't supposed to have a banter, so I suppose the one I saw was their "in party" banter added by BG1NPC mod.

Just in case anyway I posted in the MegaMod help section on the SHS boards (here).

Thanks in advance!

For your information, Leomar at the SHS board suggested me to install the thing anew in order to follow a more secure order. Keeping the AI off seems to do the trick, but will try to reinstall anyway to avoid possible future problems too. Will let you know if this does the trick.

Thanks for repoorting - I am at a loss as to what is happening. BG1NPC does not add banter to anyone in the Tutorial portion. It sounds as if something has scrambled your install, but i do not know which mod could do that.

I've just finished a reinstall process and tried it with a test character, had the same issue as before. Uninstalled the Virtue mod (which I installed last) and tested again with a new game, everything seems to run fine. Nothing related to BG1NPC mod then.

Thanks for your time, and sorry for the useless report!

Reports are never useless. When somebody else writes in with the same problem six months from now we'll be able to look back on this and say that Virtue seems to create problems when installed before the transition to BG2.

Now that I think about it, I seem to remember reading something about this on Virtue's board, that a mega-mod person was having issues in the BG1 portion of the game and it was traced to installing Virtue before transitioning to BG2.

You have to understand that more people are playing megas than previously, and quite a few modders aren't terribly familiar with the ins and outs of them. Cmorgan actually has a mega on his machine, but I don't. I've got a lightly modified BG2 install and a lightly modified Tutu install and that's it. So when we see a post that involves one, it's always a chalenge figuring out what's going on.

I can imagine how difficult keeping track of clashes is, especially on heavy modded games. That's the reason why I opened the same thread both here (since I thought it could be a BG1NPC issue when I first saw it) and at the MegaMod Help board at SHS, while I usually post in the board that I think it's the most indicate for the subject.

Now that you make me think of it, I hope this thread will help others with my issue - if needed, please feel free to change the topic title to make it more clear.

I'm just quite surprised the issue isn't documented in the Virtue readme - or at least I haven't found it: since it's compatible with BG:Trilogy I thought it would've worked ok for the whole game.

When Virtue came out, there was no such thing as a mega installation. I'm not sure if BGT was even out, but if it was, I doubt it was as stable as it is now.

That's another issue with mods. You go and write a mod and ten years later, somebody comes out and writes a mod that isn't compatible with it, but people complain that you failed to forsee the conflict and write about it in the readme. Sometimes, the modder leaves the community. Other times, he just gets busy with other things. And other times, he just completely forgets about it.

Yup I can imagine, I had such experiences before too. I wasn't complaining, I was just a bit surprised. Actually, I'm waiting for the activation mail for an account on the PocketPlane group boards so that I can report the issue, if Virtue is actively followed now, or at least put it up as an advice for new players if it's not.

kthxbye, it is fine, that you try to find the right place to report your issues. So we all can learn from it. Now, we know that "BG1 NPC Project" has nothing to do with the problem, that "Virtue" caused this in combination with BGT and that there were no dialogues added in the Candlekeep training area by "BG1 NPC Project". Also I've learned three new things, today.

Greetings Leomar
