Installing EET on your iPhone/iPad

The BG games are fantastic on an iPad - the touch interface is natural and intuitive, it makes the game really portable, and the long-play periodic style of the BG gameplay works really well on these machines. But playing the whole saga via EET is not easy. The iOS platform is noticeably more finicky than desktop versions of BG(2)EE - it doesn't like some file formats, it can't deal with changes to CHITIN.key (so no biffing), and it cannot handle the same variety of UI mods because the aspect ratio is fixed and fairly small. Also the current version of EET only supports the 2.6 patch of BG2EE, but Beamdog has not updated the iOS game to this patch, and may never do so.  :punch:

STEP 1 - get a version of EET that will work with the iOS version of BG2EE v2.5.16

Anyhoo, I have hacked up the EET package and created an unholy abomination combining elements of v12.2 and v13. It can install and work on the 2.5 patch like v12, but it has several of the v13 fixes, including weapprof.2da handling and the updated function library for compatibility with Shades of the Sword Coast. So if you want to embark on this project, first grab my forked version of EET over here.

STEP 2 - extract the iOS version of BG2EE

Second: you'll want to be already comfortable with modding the iOS version of BG2EE. It's very much like modding the desktop game. You'll need the .ipa file for the game, which is basically a .zip archive with a different file extension. Change the extension to .zip, unzip it, and you'll have the game folder. This is where you'll install your mods, including EET.  For information on modding iOS games, see here.

STEP 3 - prepare BG1/SoD

Now, EET needs a combined version of BGEE and SoD to import those campaigns into the BG2EE app. But the iOS versions of BGEE and SoD are separate games, and EET cannot use them. So you will need the desktop versions of them. Combine them if necessary and use DLCMerger as appropriate (if bought from Steam or GOG - no need if bought from Beamdog). Then install any appopriate BG1/SoD mods onto SoD.

STEP 4 - install EET

Now install EET in the BG2EE iOS game folder, pointing it at your desktop SoD game folder for resource importation.

STEP 5 - install other mods

Install any other mods on top of EET. Be careful of mods that don't work on iOS, especially UI mods. I advise using a light touch there. but you can still install a fair amount. Here is the weidu.log that I just installed:

I just started this game, only fresh out of Candlekeep so far. But I don't see any reason those mods won't work together on the iPad just as well as they would on a computer.

NOTE: do not install the EET_GUI mod that comes with EET. Every time I tried that on iOS it led to crashes. I have not tried other UI overhauls like LeUI or Dragonspear UI - I don't know whether they work with the iOS game/aspect ratio. Feel free to experiment, but if doing so I would try a modded BG2EE game with just the UI mod before doing a full install with EET.

Of special note here, EEUITweaks' "CLUAConsole for Mobile" is highly recommended. Also "A7-TextureConvert" which you would normally install onto iOS anyway, but it is especially important here because it is necessary for the imported BGEE/SoD content to work.

Do NOT install any mod that uses biffing... however...

STEP 6 - change the case of all /Override files

As noted in the general "installing mods on iOS" thread, iOS is a case-sensitive filesystem, while MacSO and Windows are not case-sensitive. It is useful to set all override files to the same case. Consider if there is some bug you find halfway through in your 100-hour game, and you fix the file in Near Infinity and need to move the fixed file over to your iOS game. The files needs to have the exact same name, with the same case, as the one you want to replace. If you originally copied SW1h03.itm into the game, and you later copy over sw1h03.ITM, the iOS system will see them as different and allow them to coexist. But BG2EE will only look for one. Best case scenario, the game still uses the original file and your fix failed. Worst case scenario, the game trips over them in a more serious way.

I have found that batch-renames using the operating system or free filename utilities take forever when operating on 90,000 files (which is what I have in my EET override folder). Strangely, what is very efficient at doing this, is the old Generalized_Biffing BG2 mod! I don't know why it can accomplish this orders of magnitude faster than modern OSes, but I am not complaining. So here is my routine for fixing the case of my override files:

  • Install Generalized_Biffing. When asked, biff "everything."
  • Open you override folder: there should be a couple hundred files still there.
  • Use the OS or some utility app to change the case of those files to all-uppercase.
  • Run Generalized_Biffing again and uninstall it.
  • Now all 90,000 files are back in the override folder, and they are all uppercase

And from that point on, any time I want to transfer anything to the modded iOS game, I make sure the files are always uppercase. This way I can be sure that they will fully overwrite any files already there.

STEP 7 - use iOS versions of music files

Now, I am not entirely sure this is necessary. But there is a slight danger in that EET imported resources from the desktop versions of BGEE and SoD, rather than the iOS versions of BGEE and SoD. For all I know, some files may be different. It doesn't really matter as far as gameplay goes, but the big potential issue is whether the iOS version of BG2EE can handle the file formats of those desktop games. The most obvious thing that stood out to me is sound files, which may be encoded in versions of .wav or .ogg files that iOS isn't designed to play. So I opened the .ipa files for the iOS versions of BGEE and SoD, and merged the contents of their "Music" folders with the Music folder for the EET install, overwriting any duplicates.

STEP 8 - prepare files for transfer

Finally, time to get the files from the computer to the iPad. For the following folders:

  • lang *
  • movies
  • music
  • worldmap
  • portraits **

...create .zip archives of those folders using the OS or some free .zip utility (MacOS has this built-in; on Windows I would use 7zip). Then change the file extension from ".zip" to ".bg2data" so now you would have:

  • lang.bg2data
  • movies.bg2data
  • music.bg2data
  • worldmap.bg2data
  • portraits.bg2data

* I delete all languages except my intended game language when doing this with the lang folder, to cut down its size. It reduced the size from ~1.4GB to ~400MB. May not be a big deal.

** There is no portraits folder in the BG2EE .ipa package - if you have modded it it will probably be in your user or games folder. If you have not modded portraits, then no need to include this one.

The override folder may need special handling. I have modded BG2EE where my override folder had more than 40,000 files in it and was about 2GB. In that case treated it like the other folders mentioned above: make a .zip archive of the folder, change the name of the file to "override.bg2data" and transfer it along with the rest.

However my current EET game has >90,000 files in the override folder and the size of the folder is almost 5GB. For whatever reason, I could not get this to be transferred into the iOS app on my iPad. So instead I split this into 5-6 batches of ~12,000-20,000 files each. I highlighted those individual files and created a .zip archive from each batch of them, naming them "files_1.bg2override" "files_2.bg2override" etc. EDIT - lately, rather than selecting 20,000 files with a mouse, I have been using Terminal commands for this part.

Note the difference: either Zip the folder and give it the same name "override" with the ".bg2data" extension; or else Zip groups of individual files and give them any name (doesn't matter) with the ".bg2override" extension. Read this sentence three times, because it is important.

Step 9 - transfer the files over

If the BG2EE app on your device is unmodded, you can use that. But if it has been modded, then delete it and download a fresh copy. This will wipe out all your savegames and data. Start the app, start a new game. With the game clock running, close the app.

Now one-by-one, by whatever method you normally use, move those files over to the device. If you move "lang.bg2data" over, the device will ask you "how open this file?" and you tap "BG2EE." The game will come to the front, and there will be a slight delay as it absorbs the files. You will see the game clock frozen, and then begin to run normally. For the smaller folders this will be quick; for the oevrride files especially it can take 30 seconds or maybe more. Keep the app open while the game clock is frozen, so it can incorporate the files. Once the game clock starts running, go back to the main iPad screen. Move the next file over, tell it to open in BG2EE, see the app come up, watch the game clock frozen and then start running. Close the app and repeat for all of the .bg2data and .bg2override files you have prepared. (The order in which you move them over doesn't matter. Just make sure you give the app enough time to process each one.)

Step 10 - play the game!

Now close the BG2EE app and then call up the app switcher, and fully kill the app. (Swipe it up, so it disappears from the app switcher.) Give it a second, then start the app again. This time, when the game runs, it will incorporate all the modded files you just put into it. It might take a few seconds to get to the opening splash screen. There might be a few other areas where you see pauses like this - I get a 3-4 second pause when clicking "new game" and again when going from the class selection screen to the kit selection screen.

The main UI is a bit visually broken, but it still works perfectly well, you can choose a campaign and start or load a game, etc. Congratulations, you're playing EET on your iPhone.

Are these bugs in EET v13? All my energy has gone to backporting fixes from between v12 and v13. (There were about 10.) I haven’t looked at any fixes for bugs related to v13 itself. I’ll have to look at those.

Only those two are what I know of which you are also affected with.

There are voice related issues caused by 2.6 - the new AoN voicesets' rare select lines glitch and Dark Horizons pulls a line from them into one of their NPCs for some reason which I haven't checked yet why. There's also the polish of reverting the rare select lines to their proper behavior - again, 2.6 only -, and maybe going over the BG1 audio to import over the voicesets which were redubbed in BG2 (like the set Phylidia uses). This last one could be done in 2.5 but also missing from BGT as well though.

Well, the first order of business is to just get the damn thing working. Second order of business is to refine it and squash bugs. I'll take a look at those PRs when I get a spare moment, and make a hotfix mod/update the repo linked above.

Meantime, I've found a bit of a problem: among the bits of the UI that are busted are the checkboxes for the various graphics and gameplay options. They are totally invisible, so you cannot see what options are toggled on or off. I just noticed this; I don't know if it is related to this EET version or some other mod in this fairly large install. (I am trying out a few more UI modifications than I usually use.)

Current solution: set all graphics and gameplay options how you want them before you transfer over the modded game files. :undecided:

hi guys, I am new in this modding and would like to amend some quick save games from my ipad BGEE.

I am unwilling to buy a destkop version of the games, so I managed to extract the BGEE app from my ipad via iMazing app. Unfortunately, I could not retrieve the chitin key (which is needed to open NearInfinity), and whenever I click on the app itself, NI crashes. 

Truly sorry for this stupid question, but can someone help out?

Bit of an update here, for anyone modding their iOS games. I’ve just completed a rather big install - EET + IWD1 + IWD2 + a bunch of quest/NPC/tweak mods. Override folder is 6 GB, with 120,000 files. I’ll add the weidu.log soon.

1) EET adds a file with a space from BG1: “MONKTU 8.DLG” This file crashes my iOS BG2EE app. make sure you remove this from your override folder before transferring files to the iPad. 

2) This time I tried running A7-Texture-Convert on alpha-blended files only, based on the recommendation found here. This saved a TON of time - the mod installed in about an hour, instead of 4-5 hours. But unfortunately it left a bunch of UI elements and other .pvrz files invisible/black. So you should choose option 7 with this mod - “override files only.” I just let it run overnight. 

3) It seems that EET and possibly other mods put movies into a /moves subfolder inside the /lang/en_US directory; the BG2EE .ipa file structure has a separate /movies folder outside the /lang directory. I moved my movies to this separate /movies folder. (The BG1 intro movie still isn’t running, and I’m not sure why… but it’s not that big a deal, I don’t need to see Sarevok throw that poor sap off the roof again.)

4) I have yet to try out any UI overhauls, though I would love to. From what I can tell, all of Pecca and LeFreut’s UIs are designed for widescreen displays, and don’t work with the iPad app’s 4:3 aspect ratio. Any even if they could work, I don’t think they would incorporate IWD1 and IWD2 campaigns, which my mod adds to the EET ‘Choose Campaign’ menu. 

If I can think of any other lessons or tips from this recent install, I will add them to this post.
