[OS X] Please help with Gov't District crash

Hello again :)

Following the BiG World multi-mod install instructions (I believe the version is 5.5 beta) downloaded from Spellhold Studios, I find that BGII crashes every time I try to take a party to the Government District. It does this even if I use MoveToArea from the CLUAConsole. I'm aware that at least four mods--Amber, Beyond the Law, Kelsey, and Sylmar Battlefield--affect this area. In past installations, I've had no such problems, so I suspect the problem has to do with the order in which I installed the mods, moreso than one or another mod in particular having a problem.

I was also getting a crash when clicking the Rest button, but Nythrun's Fix solved that problem (thanks a bunch, Nythrun!!!) :)

Below is my current WeiDU Log. I'm dearly hoping that someone can shed some light on this problem, so that I may correct it and continue my mod testing. If it becomes necessary to sacrifice any mod, I'll reluctantly do so, but my main goal is to get as many (if not all) of these mods to work together in a single game, giving many possibilities for many combinations of parties.

TIA for any assistance and happy modding!

Eric

I'm curious about that, too. The inability to run the BWP Fixpack led me to give up on my mac mega mod attempt (although Steve's new version of his install tools is enticing me to give it another go). I'm actually quite impressed you made it as far as the Gov't District, as I could never get past a CTD upon leaving the Chateau :)

Any chance you could run the following command?:

weidu.exe --change-log-list ar1000.are ar1000.bcs > ar1000.log

... and then post the contents of ar1000.log?

There's a solid 30% of these mods that I haven't even heard of... I have no idea what they affect.

How did you run the BWP Fixpack? Its fixes and changes are required for making so many mods run together, and there is no version for the Mac.

I did not run that component; I did install the BG2 Fixpack (as that's always the first mod I install).

I will surely give this a try. For me, it would start out in the Terminal as something like: "./weidu-mac change-log-list...", if I not be mistaken. I'll see if I can get it to work.

Thanks,

Eric

I'd imagine the "--" preceding "change-log-list" is necessary, as I doubt WeiDU differs in syntax very much from platform to platform. The "--" is certainly necessary on Unix (I think it's a GNU convention, come to think of it), and OSX is running a Unix kernel and a Unix-like shell interface. I'd be interested to know what syntax ends up working for you... as I'm too lazy to check the manual.

On an unrelated note, there's no reason why you couldn't apply the BWP patches manually, should push come to shove... You'd need an OSX binary of patch.exe, but that shouldn't be too hard to find (I'll see if I can't find one in a minute). The only reason the BWP fixpack doesn't work on OSX is because it operates via batch script, and makes use of Windows' command line utilities and win32 binaries from GNU. I can't tell you how tempted I am to rewrite the damn thing as a bash script. Windows is lame beyond belief... I mean, where art thou, rudimentary control structures?

patch is included in the default installation of OSX, so sayeth the wise Google.

Okay, I thought I'd write out a quick guide on how to use diff and patch to create diffs and apply them, respectively. (I'm trying to preempt someone from asking what the heck I was on about in my previous post.) Here goes...

The basic idea of diff is that you can feed it an original file and an altered file, and diff will create a list of differences between the two files and output that list to the console.

The syntax of diff, is:

diff <options> <original_file> <altered_file>

And an example usage, would be:

diff -u setup-bg2fixpack.tp2 setup-bg2fixpack.tp2.new

Suppose that setup-bg2fixpack.tp2.new is identical to the original tp2, except that you've changed the version number. In this case, you would get output looking something like this:

--- setup-bg2fixpack.tp2	2009-02-27 12:54:40.006000000 +0930
+++ setup-bg2fixpack.tp2.new	2009-02-27 12:54:32.159000000 +0930
@@ -1,7 +1,7 @@
BACKUP ~bg2fixpack/backup~ // location to store files for uninstall purposes
AUTHOR ~webmaster@gibberlings3.net~ // email address displayed if install fails

-VERSION ~v7~
+VERSION ~v300~

README ~bg2fixpack/readme-bg2fixpack.html~

The important part of this output, is the "-VERSION ~v7~" and "+VERSION ~v300~" part. This is a recipe that describes how to transform the original file into the new file. Any line that begins with a "-" is removed from the original file, and any line that begins with a "+" is added to the original file. As you can see, the line with the old version number, is to be removed and replaced by the new one.

This list of differences can be used by the patch program to make changes to the original file. All you need to do is redirect the output to a file, which can be done like this:

diff -u setup-bg2fixpack.tp2 setup-bg2fixpack.tp2.new > setup-bg2fixpack.tp2.dif

This will create a file called "setup-bg2fixpack.tp2.dif" in the current directory, and this file will list all the changes that are necessary to turn setup-bg2fixpack.tp2 into setup-bg2fixpack.tp2.new. (You are quite welcome at this point to delete setup-bg2fixpack.tp2.new, as it's no longer required.)

The next step is to feed the files to patch. The syntax of patch, is:

patch <options> <original_file> <list_of_differences>

An example usage, would be:

patch setup-bg2fixpack.tp2 setup-bg2fixpack.tp2.dif

By running this example, the file setup-bg2fixpack.tp2 will be automagically transformed into setup-bg2fixpack.tp2.new, but will retain it's old filename.

All of the files in the BWP fixpack that end in ".patch" work by the exact same principle I just discussed; they are equivalent to our ".dif" file; they are created using diff, and they are applied using patch. The only difference is that BWP has the process heavily automated, to save you from applying each patch manually, in the manner above.

I hope this is remotely useful to someone.

Exist a converter to convert Windows batch-files into similar ones for Mac?

Not that I know of. OSX makes use of an actual scripting language, whereas Windows merely simulates the functionality of one. It could be rewritten by hand quite easily... in fact, a lot of the trickery that BWP Fixpack pulls would be unnecessary on OSX. I don't own a Mac myself, so I'm not certain about the specifics... but if it's true that OSX uses a command interpreter like bash (something POSIX-complient), and I'm very sure this is the case... then there is absolutely nothing that prevents BWP Fixpack being rewritten for OSX.

You need to stop putting ideas in my head, Leomar... I'm feeling yet another compulsive urge to tinker.

I seem to remember Steve having a nice^Wugly little bat-to-shellscript converter hack somewhere.

Thanks, Erik. I'll send Steve a PM.

Any chance you could run the following command?:

weidu.exe --change-log-list ar1000.are ar1000.bcs > ar1000.log

... and then post the contents of ar1000.log?

OK, this worked. Close to what I suspected, the Mac command was "./weidu-mac --change-log-list ar1000.are ar1000.bcs > ar1000.log"

This generated several files in the BGII - SoA directory, including the log, and here are the contents of the log:

[./weidu-mac] WeiDU version 20700

[./Chitin.key] 182 BIFFs, 41794 resources

[./dialog.tlk] 161657 string entries

Things have gone from bad to worse, as now I get a crash to desktop just after entering Copper Coronet. Clearly, this game is unplayable as it is :p My party enters through either door, and is inside the inn. Then, all characters/creatures vanish from the screen, and the game crashes! I ran the game under OS 9, and got the same result, with an error message (forgot to bring the note with me) that said an assertion failed in something like ObjCreature.cpp (I don't recall the exact name, but that's close) at a line number with five digits. I'll bring the note with me and post the exact message soon. I may have to find a new order in which to install the mods, then test some more.

On the plus side, ToB runs just fine so far, and I have a party in a test game about to face Gromnir, then continue on.

Thanks,

Eric

Eeek. Assertion error. Once I get my install working properly, I'll do some testing. But I'm starting to like the idea that those Moinesse Avatars are evil. Try uninstalling those. But before you do that, remove the lines with "MOINESSEAVATARS.TP2" from WeiDU.log, save it as WeiDU.log.bak, then blank WeiDU.log so that WeiDU won't reinstall the whole mod stack (which can occasionally break things, for whatever reason). Afterwards, replace the blanked logfile with your backed-up copy. I've also had a lot of issues with a modified version of Nythrunfix that I use. I don't know if those problems exist in the original, but I wouldn't advise using it unless you need to, and there's certainly no reason to use it if you're installing it last. You might try uninstalling that too (but just do it the usual way, as there's no need in this case for all that whooeygooey with the logfile).

I'll have a better think about it later, but honestly I don't know how much help I can be, since I'm utterly unfamiliar with most of the mods you use. I'll look at my notes and see if I know of any problems with the install order you posted, but the best thing for you to do, when you get around to uninstalling BG2, is to uninstall each mod one-by-one, starting from the top, and loading the game after each step to see if the problem disappears. You might be able to isolate the cause that way.

OMG, is my English really that bad? Snip, snip...
