Custom map marker labels shown as "invalid" or as other markers

Very strange thing going on in my EET install (WeiDU log posted below, which I've discussed at length with some very patient people on the forums the past couple days). When I add custom markers to varioius maps, the labels will sometimes either switch with other markers, or become listed as "Invalid: 300000X". For example, I added a marker labeled "Jaheira" outside the Friendly Arm Inn, then traveled to Beregost and added a couple more there ("Kagain", etc.). After a little more playing, I noticed the "Jaheira" marker was now labeled "Kagain", the "Kagain" marker was now labeled "Invalid: 3000005", etc. I never saw this in my previous install, and haven't seen it reported by anyone else, though I finally thought I had everything working this time after my most recent clean reinstall of EET. Unless this is a sign of a more serious conflict (though I can't imagine how it can be at this point), I'm not going to reinstall yet again just for this, but I would like to understand what's going on. The only thing I can possibly think of is there's a bug in the game whereby if you delete any of the black default map markers (I did delete the Beregost markers for Firebeard's House and Landrin's House), the whole system gets screwed up - but that's just a very uneducated guess.

... I'm not going to reinstall yet again just for this, but I would like to understand what's going on. The only thing I can possibly think of is there's a bug ...

After installing the very last mod or making any modification of the game, did you start a new game ? Or did you reload an old save game to check for these "inconsistencies". Cause you NEED to start a NEW game, not load an old variant as the old save game doesn't contain the modified dialog.tlk ... file the game uses in all the strings to say what things are.

Right, if you custom added strings before reinstalling, the custom added strings will have disappeared(due to the way weidu.exe backups I believe). If your reinstall made the same changes to strings as before, it should not be an issue outside of custom added strings however.

If you add a marker after your reinstall, it should not bug. If it does then there's another issue.

If this is NOT the usual trying-old-save-with-new-install-and-different-dialogue.tlk issue...then it is a bug I have noticed as well in EE/EET.

If you manually set markers in game on an area map, I have seen (randomly)

a) they are labelled incorrect when you revisit the area (as described above)

b) they appear in another area (with my label and at the position where I put them in the other area)

I had not yet reported the issue thinking it was my local problem - seems it is not.

I assume there is an issue with storing such manual label and user text in the saves.

I forgot to mention that yes, this is an entirely new save game that I started after my fresh reinstall of everything from the ground up (i.e. I completely uninstalled BG1/DoS/BG2 in Win 7 including deleting all old save folders, restarted the PC, reinstalled all three games, reinstalled all six mods in the order given, and started an entirely new campaign/save with entirely new characters). So I'm guessing I'm just seeing what most people haven't bothered reporting, according to Roxanne's confirmation. I've actually seen something somewhat similar and slightly annoying with the "Assign Keys" function in Gameplay Options - i.e. the first time I try to assign my keyboard control bindings, it may require several attempts of changing certain key assignments before they finally stopped automatically resetting to default. (I may be reaching on that, but to me it seems like a similar type of issue to the map markers thing, where the game is automatically "overriding" player input.)

Anyway, at least temporarily, it seems to have sorted itself out, just like with my assigned keys - after a couple of attempts to delete and again recreate the custom map markers, they now seem to be "stable" with the labels I input. I guess it's just a vanilla EE and/or EET bug no one's noticed or bothered to report until now?

Since you and ArthurP have ran into this and I haven't, is there anything you can note that might be different on your setup than many of the others.. OS, install folder, etc you might be able to think off ?

Say like the baldur.lua files content might help to enlighten root of the issue.

Link to comment

Since Grim is seeing this too and we now have three separate setups confirming the issue, it probably is simply a bug people didn't notice or simply didn't think to report. What's unclear is whether it's an issue with EET, which I assume all three of us are playing, or with BG2:EE vanilla. If it's still relevant, I'm playing on Win 7 64-bit, and the game's installed to an unprotected folder (C:\Games\Baldur's Gate II EE). Not sure if the .lua file(s) would be helpful to see, but if so and you all could explain exactly which ones (I have three baldur.lua files in My Documents and its subfolders, and two more in the main BG1:EE and BG2:EE install directories) and how I can transmit them, I'd be happy to share them.

I'm also curious whether any of you have also experienced the issue I described with assigning keyboard control keys and the game then "overriding" your manual key assignments? Not a big deal on that either (the issue eventually resolved itself after repeated inputs in the Assign Keys screen), but if it's somehow an EET issue, it may also be relevant to report to the appropriate "authorities". ;)

Link to comment

Is the key an issue in a single installation? (IE, you install EET, change the key binding from EET, it reverts to default after a while)

The key bindings are stored in the baldur.lua file. However, EET makes its own directory in Your Documents by copying some settings from the BG2 directory. So if your last BG2 install didn't have the key bindings, every time you delete My Documents/Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition Trilogy, it should reset your key bindings.

There used to be an issue in an older release too but it was fixed a while ago.

Link to comment

Grim - the problem for me with the key bindings didn't seem to be where the bindings were getting reset just once on a new install. It actually happened that a few consecutive times I tried to change the default bindings after my first two fresh installs and then save and exit the settings menus, when I went back to gameplay and then checked the settings again, some of the controls would have either reverted to default keys, or to other keys I didn't select. Strangely, with my latest reinstall, the key bindings were already set as I had set them in my last game, even though I'm absolutely certain I had uninstalled/deleted all of my game files and all of the save/ini/lua files in My Documents related to BG1/BG2/mods etc. prior to restarting the PC and doing that new reinstall from the start (GOG versions).

But it's sounding more like the map markers is a universal vanilla BG1/BG2:EE issue (thanks Fouinto for the feedback), and the key bindings might have just been some weirdness on my end if nobody else is seeing that problem.

Hello, together; New in this forum, but I wanted to add to this thread...

I experience the same problems. Map markers get invalid, swap places, occur on wrong maps.
This happens with own created markers as well as changed original markers (like adding text
to an existing marker). Also the buttons take over the color of swapped markers.

I searched google for this error in the original game, but could not find a hint
that this error existed there. I've also played the original game when it was new.
I don't remember such a bug. So it seems to be in EE only.

My setup: Windows 7/64. Game is installed on drive d:
I downloaded version 2.3.67.3 from gog and started playing (single player).
I did not change anything (like mods...) except the keyboard mapping
and the sound and screen settings.

The error occurred from the very beginning, on nearly every second
custom marker. I might be that it only happens if there are two custom
markers in the same map or two have the same color. It seems that one single
marker in a map is not affected, but this might be accidental.

As a C++ developer for me this looks like a data structure (list, set, map...)
getting overwritten, either by a wrong algorithm in the data structure or by
an external direct memory access.

Drago - thanks for the input; I've deleted all my existing custom markers (every time I added a new one, the others got messed up anyway), and will avoid editing any default markers as well (I hadn't thought to do that yet, and now I won't). Now that we've confirmed this is almost definitely a vanilla BG2:EE bug and not a mod issue, I doubt Beamdog will fix this relatively minor (but annoying) issue so long after the game's release. That said, does anyone who's been around here a while (I'm very new to this myself - just bought the EEs on GOG a week ago to try out EET) think it would still be worth bringing to their attention on the Beamdog forums or through some other means?

Yes. If you won't complain, you'll never have the chance to get the fix you deserve.
