Odd, random, frequent crashes

Every now and then, the game crashes. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it, or at least not one I recognize. If I restart, reload and reiterate exactly the same action during which the game crashed, everything usually works fine. It happened the first time as I was exiting the first dungeon, then a few times while I was shuffling items around from an inventory to another, now I just had a few crashes while using the console (the party was standing around in the docks, if it matters).

I get an error message in the ToBEx console and a popup window with the "assertion failed in X.cpp at line Y" message.

Weidu log follows.

I remember having a problem with jaheira shapeshifting (bear) a long time ago but I think it's fixed now , right ? ( the game crashed in Waukeen's Promenade if jaheira was under bear shape, especially when reloading a game).

Do you have 'Logging On=1' in your baldur.ini file and if so, do you get any text logged in Baldur.err (not baldur.log) after such a crash (apart from the ---Start Logging Session--- header)?

Follow Miloch's advice.

Otherwise, I've no idea - sorry. It's very hard to diagnose random crashes, especially as I've never seen it myself. The only thing I can think of is that it's some odd ToBEx issue. You could try disabling ToBEx (edit scsii/scsii.ini, change Disable_ToBEx to 1, or add the line Disable_ToBEx 1 if no ToBEx line is present, then reinstall) - not that I've any reason to think that's the problem, other than that it's an exe-level component.

I got the mod running with ToBex finally(had cd issues). I had crashes before but now i enabled software graphics rendering (in bg config and there have not been any crashes since, i think thats the solution). Go to config and enable software rendering everything hopefully comes to norm like it did in my case. I run with ToBex and everything works perfect now.

Sorry for bringing this up again, but I've narrowed down the conflicts to two other mods: Unfinished Business and Coran. Apparently, they don't play nice with the latest versions of SCS2 (due to ToBEx, I guess). It only happens with those two. Does ToBEx hate PPG or what?

Okay, solved the issue by having the antivirus not check the Black Isle folder. No more crashes. Beats me why, but I'm not complaining.
I would recommend to disable the Virus Protection while you play games ... as it's quite rare that they would pop on while you are playing a game, and you would see it in the performance too.

Since no one has done that yet, kind of hard to troubleshoot without it. Also, since DavidW hasn't been around much, the more information you provide, the more likely he'll be able to fix it when he does get around to looking into it.

I have uninstalled the component, but i'll install it again if needed. :p

But before i notice this :

when i have loaded my save, the game crash to desktop with this message : An Assertion Failed in ChVidImage3d.cpp at line number 899 .

And it happened only on the save with jaheira in bear's form. So the save was corrupt, but shadowkeeper could open it and notice an item on jaheira was not found in the database.

This item was named DW#SHBRPé♫ ( yes with these strange char at the end).

I try again after cleaning the save ,same result, but this time the item was named DW#SHBRP♂!!

I hope you have enough information, if not i'll reinstall improved shapeshifting

ps: sorry for my english :)

That's a definitely mislabeled letter, and surprise surprise, your "bad" English is indirectly connected, as your Operation Systems non-ANSI compatible language systems is the cause of this tragedy. How, I don't know, but at some point during the downloading the archive file and playing the game, one of the files was mislabeled because it was understood wrongly by a program that uses your native non-Unicode codepage... more info on that is here, on #3.2.

You can actually see this in the forum too as the " Pé♫ " or like I see it this: psongnote1.png

Is actually this:

" P é & # 9 8 3 5; "

... without the spaces in it.

We have not run into this within the SCSII before this... it has only been seen actually in the Infinity Animations, because it used unusual marks.

I looked at the SCS2 files and didn't see any issue with them. It doesn't use odd characters like that. Also, that isn't even a valid filename that the engine would recognise, since it limits them to 8 characters. Maybe a bug in ShadowKeeper - did you already try to edit your game previously? It might help if you can zip and attach the save game. You probably can't do that here, but you could attach it on the megamod forum at spellholdstudios.net and link it here. Better than uploading to one of those adware spam servers like mediafire anyway - I know DavidW doesn't like those and neither do I.
