It's... a lot. Over 600 components installed! Definitelty more mods than I've ever installed onto one game before (because, this is really three games in one). Most notably, of course, this includes all the latest versions of my own mods, giving me a chance to do some in-depth playtesting. I've already found one minor bug, with NPC_EE not giving proper dual-wielding specialization to rangers.

New stuff to me:

  • Imoen Forever. Though honestly I tend to boot Imoen from my party to make way for other NPCs, so I'm not sure how much play this will get.
  • EndlessBG1, Transitions, and SODTweaks. Looking forward to more flexible transitions between campaigns.
  • ExtraEnhancedExpandedEncounters, MiH Quests & Encounters, the Calling, and Bridges Block. More encounters is good!
  • NPCs I've never used before: Emily, Helga, and... Rose! This is an old BG1 NPC designed for BGT and never updated for BGEE. It never hit version 0.3, and there are some minor typos and stuff. But she is a bard who is not Garrick or Eldoth, and while I always give them kits, Rose strikes me as better suited to be a trueclass bard. She has some fun interjections and an encounter or two, as we'll see below. I had to do some surgery on the mod to make it install, and then some more surgery to make her actually appear in BGEE, and then some more surgery to make it work with EET. But it's working! (Unfortunately, something is wrong with Drake, my favorite BG1 cleric: the text for his name has the wrong string. I haven't recruited him so I'm not sure if it is one small error or whether he won't be playable in this game. We'll see.

The big question now, at the start of the game, is of course "what class should Charname be?" I really want to try out the newest update of my Will to Power psionics mod, so I've rolled up a ranger/psion... but I also kind of want to use my new "Scion of Bhaal" cleric kit which lets you choose spell spheres as you level up. I rolled up a Mage Hunter ranger kit, on the theory that Gorion would teach you some basic skills to counter enemy wizards; and the idea is, at some point after finding out the big secret I will dual to cleric and choose the Scion of Bhaal kit. This idea is very much geared toward "stick as close as possible to the story" while playing a psion would be geared more toward experimenting with new stuff. I'm really torn. I've played the Mage Hunter to level 4, in chapter 3, but... I've played ranger/clerics before. Maybe I should get out of my comfort zone* and go back and play the psion! Hmmm... damn restartitis!

* (As you can see, I have a weird thing about always playing a Charname who has flexibility and multiple skills. Usually some warrior levels, almost always some spellcasting. I don't know why! I've never played a Charname who was a single-class thief or mage, or something like that.)

Nah, that only leaves four slots for companions, and five slots is already too few. I end up taking lots of companions for a very short time, since I want to see as much NPC content as possible.

Maybe the alternative is to play two games simultaneously, and take on different companions in each game… maybe. That way I can have ten party members stay for a long time, instead os five for a short while and another five for a short while. With so many mod NPCs, plus the NPC Project for the Bioware NPCs, party management gives me major FOMO.

But it sounds like it might get boring, constantly playing the same content twice over.

Maybe some people here can give me advice on which NPCs work well together (EDIT - meaning, in terms of conversation and interjections)? Then I could put together two squads. The contenders:

Warriors:

  • Khalid - fighter
  • Minsc - barbarian
  • Ajantis - paladin
  • Kivan - ranger
  • Coran - fighter/thief or ranger, or something, not sure yet
  • Kagain - fighter
  • Shar-teel - fighter
  • Sirene - paladin
  • Emily - archer

Priests:

  • Jaheria - druid
  • Branwen - fighter/cleric
  • Drake - cleric
  • Helga - cleric or fighter/cleric
  • Faldorn - druid (but later)
  • Yeslick - fighter/cleric (but later)
  • Finch - cleric
  • Quayle - cleric/mage
  • Tiax - cleric/thief

Wizards:

  • Edwin - conjurer
  • Dynaheir - evoker
  • Xzar - necromancer
  • Valerie - sorcerer
  • Imoen - currently sorcerer/thief
  • Quayle - cleric/mage
  • Xan - fighter/mage (currently hexblade)
  • Garrick - fighter/mage (gallant)
  • Eldoth - mage/thief (blade)
  • Rose - mage/thief (bard)
  • Indira - fighter/mage

Pure thieves:

  • Safana
  • Alora
  • Skie
  • Montaron

I'm more or less set on taking Jaheira & Khalid through the Nashkel mines at the beginning, and then having them go their own way and investigate things off-screen with the Harpers while I track down Tazok and his allies.

Imoen as a sorcerer/thief is kind of interesting. It certainly works with her background, in one sense - unexplainable magical powers bubbling up while she is more focused on being a rogue. It actually kind of works better then the canon idea that she takes up studying wizardry and becomes an archmage in less than a year! Sorcerers get spells a level later - so no 2nd-level spells until level 4, which is forever for a multiclass character. On the one hand this is fine: for the first third of BG1 she is basically a rogue with a couple cantrips, not very different from her canonical role. But on the other hand it's pretty annoying to be going up against enemies suitable for 4th-level characters and her best move is, like, Color Spray. So I recently dropped her off in Beregost with Firebead Elvenhair to try to get her magic under control and advance her skills a bit. Translation: I kicked her out of the party in favor of Rose.

So far I've taken Marque, the Mage Hunter, to chapter 3. I did some simple Beregost-centric quests with imoen and Grey the Dog, then picked up J&K, and went into the Nashkel mines with Imoen, Grey, Jaheira, Khalid, and Rose. Grey was killed holding off a minor army of skeletons while we battled Mulahey, and was replaced by Xan. In my last game I made a Xan a Bladesinger, because he's an elf spellslinger with a Moonblade, right?  A hero of Evereska! but with all his doom & gloom, this time around I set him up as a Hexblade - a similar fighter/mage kit with bard songs, but with inherent access to spells like Doom and Curse and Malison.

We explored the Valley of Tombs and the Gibberling Mountains, picked up Sam the Sick Fugitive, and brought him to the FAI, stopping in Nashkel along the way to turn in the main chapter quest and dispatch Nimbul. Then J&K went on their Harper way, Xan stayed in Feldpost's Inn, and I left Imoen at Firebead's house because it's dangerous out here! Now it was just Marque and Rose. Needing some kind of divine casting, we recruited up Helga on the road, as well as Emily. Then we went to Nashkel again and picked up Minsc. So now Marque, Minsc, Emily, Helga, and Rose are heading southwest to rescue Dynaheir.

The question will become, how long to keep people around? I think Dynaheir has a little side-quest after she is rescued, looking for her spellbook? Or diary? But after that I think she and Minsc will go on their way. (I'll see them and J&K again later on in the SoD campaign.) Will I keep Helga after we do her ogre quest? Or pick up Drake or Branwen instead? Or maybe, in addition! I tend to juggle NPCs a LOT, but I hope I'm not missing a ton of content by doing that...

but I also kind of want to use my new "Scion of Bhaal" cleric kit

Makes perfect sense, since Bhall is ... ouh, he is dead, so it doesn't. Erhm welcome a priest with no magic powers. -do-able perhaps, but not in the forgotten realms.
As for the other... yeah, how about you just start with the classic: Fighter and go from there. I am sure you can find a mod or two to help you out, like kit tomes. Yes, that boots out the other WTF ever it was, yes, I know it's your own made mod, so it should go out of the laundrybasket automatically, but to each of their own.

Currently I tend to use a party of at least 2-3 vanilla npc, 1-2 fixed standalone mod npc (with cross mod banters), and one slot for rotation when I'm doing their personal quests, either from vanilla or mod. If I really like someone, I will take them as a permanent party member next time.

One of the reason that I always try to use a fixed party, and always try to include some vanilla npcs, and never separate the pairs of vanilla npcs, is because a lot of good npc (including the bg1 npc mod) has some interesting location based or story triggered banters that are worth seeing that you may miss it if you keep changing the party member. Additionally, some standalone npc mod may have special location or story triggered banters that involved further interaction from vanilla npc, which I quite enjoy it. Some examples:

If you bring Drake to undercellar, he has special banter, and some vanilla npcs may interject.

Jaheira may interject some banters between Eldoth and Skie.

Vanilla npcs may comment  something during Foundling friendship talks with pc.

Isra and Adrian may interject vanilla npcs location and story triggered banters.

You may also consider to bring vanilla npcs only for some mod quests because of the interjections. Basically all Lava's, Kulyok's and Jastey's one, and also the romantic encounters.

.....

Tldr: there are so many npc mods that i want to try, but I start to think that all npc mods truly shine when they are in a party of mostly vanilla npcs. The authors basically spent much effort in writing those interactions with our beloved vanilla npcs that are too good to miss.

Do you realize that nothing stops a demigod from getting his own powers from his own essence? It happens with Sorcerers even if they are long related to greater beings, imagine a child of a God.

Thing is, the Bhallspawn had to learn this priesthood from somewhere. Goodluck explaining that away from Gorion.
Now yes, this all depends on the kits that are nowhere explained as a game mechanism, and in can be seen as a contrivancy as such to be learned from after adventuring as the standard non-kitted class for a time. But like I said, there's no where you can find a Tome of Scion to Bhall. It would need to be an additional mod ...

Always good to see a modlist from someone who knows what he's doing.

I'm a little surprised glams npcs didn't make it in. They're certainly on par with your other mod npcs, with Dave being the pick of the litter in my opinion.

If you want to use Emily, I would bring her with Sirene. They have quite a bit of interactivity, the the point of spoiling Emily's not-so-big secret early if you're paying attention.

Helga is fine as a straight cleric since you're using APR on specialization.

You know Jarno, the game already gives you a bunch of divine powers rooted in your being sired by a god. They come from within; they come from dreams? Is it so difficult to think one version of this character might learn to harness and control that essence, to draw out more such abilities. (Not for nothing the kit allows the player to be self-directed and choose your own spell selection as you advance.) If you can't role-play something like that... might want to see a doctor, sounds like your imagination might be busted.

Anyway you know you are on a site devoted almost entirely to MODifying the way the game works?*

* (That and duck racism, apparently.)

Incidentally, I just experienced that weird Might & Guile but that randomly gives a character the "Aggressive Fighting Posture" ability. I had two saves very close to each other - one on the coast road south of FAI in which Charname is normal and does not have the ability; and one in Beregost in which he mysteriously has it. I don't even think I rested between the saves! It's a great case where I can look at the savegames before and after the ability appeared, so I loaded both of them into Near Infinity and... I can find nothing that would explain this. There is no reference to it in any scripts, or other spells, or... anything! It's so damn weird.

Yes, for one reason alone, and it's this:

That's not how magic works in the Realms.

Or the other possibility is that your are insane/unreasonable, so ... I'll just go with that.
Now, if one was to draw the power from the inheritance they got from Bhall... the point where those powers were taken by Irenicus, would kill that character for sure. Good arguments. Just for the wrong side.
