[SCS v35.3] 'Slow Poison' spell tweak causes the game to crash

Recommended Posts

As the title say my game crashes in BG1EE when I cure a poisoned party member or the main character with 'Slow Poison', it doesn't crash if the character is not poisoned, 'Neutralize Poison' works fine.

Not sure if it's a SCS bug or incompatibility with some other mod/component, but I did a new installation with, more or less, the same mods/components and this never happened to me with SCS 34.3.

Just decided to test this with version 35.2 and I can confirm the game freezes up.  You can cast "slow Poison" on a character and nothing will happen but if they are poisoned and you cast it on them, the game will crash.

If you installed all spell tweaks component there is a part about slow poison there, might be related if scs is the issue:

Slow Poison now genuinely slows the effect of poison (reducing the speed of its effect by 90%) instead of neutralizing it altogether (BG1TUTU,BG2EE,BGEE,BGT,EET,SoA,ToB; not Spell Revisions)

Ok, I reinstalled with Spell Tweaks choosing by category and didn't install 'Icewind Dale-inspired tweaks to Baldur's Gate/Baldur's Gate II spells' which includes the 'Slow Poison' tweak, now the game doesn't crash anymore and 'Slow Poison' works.

This is the WeiDU.log of the reinstall:

Thank you for the suggestion Flipper, I didn't see there was a tweak for this spell.

That's a pity tho I like the changes, oh well.

I say scrap the whole thing. There are many great things in this new version of the mod but this change to the Slow Poison spell is not one of them. No need to put any more time and energy on it. Just my opinion.

Tbh I think this is the kind of situation that requires renaming a spell and switching another for something more unique.

Like for example, standardize it to a single spell, say a spell called Purge Poison, which works exactly as Neutralize Poison, and change slow poison to a different spell, say, one that simply adds or sets 50% poison resistance or more. (I don't think there are spells in the game for poison resistance, are there? Outside scrolls...). In a loose manner of speaking, halving the poison damage is slowing it, although it's not a perfect idea anyway because of how the game only uses integers for damage.

Yes, ceil rounding guarantees that such a spell would be useless if the poison deals 1 damage per second or per X seconds, even against the stronger X damage per second it's a bit situational.

Another possibility is a durational buff that heals 1hp whenever damage is taken, this negates weak poisons and (default) insect spells, but is likely exploitable and I couldn't recommend it as a solution.

The component here just shifts BG(2) Slow Poison over to IWD format, i.e. using the Slow Poison opcode (opcode 329), and the bug is that the component should be setting parameter1 to 10 and doesn't.

However, reading this thread and looking at how 329 works, it's clear that IWDEE relies on some fairly strong constraints on how the Poison opcode is applied that aren't honored in BG(2), so I think the sensible thing to do is deprecate this component.

In any case, the hotfix is just to set use_iwd_slow_poison=0 in stratagems.ini.

The crude way is to delete sppr212.spl from the override folder, so that the game goes back to using the default version of Slow Poison. That might have some minor negative effects but probably not anything serious.

That seems to work. What kind of negative effects could it have?
