Bandit camp goes crazy

Recommended Posts

When i enter the Bandit Camp with Khivan in my party, Khivan starts a fight with Thazok, resulting in all bandits attacking my party. No problem, i expect that. A few strategically placed Webs coupled with archery and a couple of good old Fireballs should handle that without too many problems. At least: that's how it worked in my BGT install.

Now i have Tutu installed and what happens is this: Khivan challenges Tazok, Tazok attacks and after 10 seconds or so Ardenar Crush and a couple of knobgoblins come from the north. From the west Taddeusz and an army of archers come marching. Then my screen freezes for about ten seconds and after that everyone from inside Tazok's tent drops by to add to the fun. Now, this is a tough enough group with SCS installed, but combined with Tazok, Thaddeusz and 20 or so archers (including some Black Talon Elites), this is utterly devastating.

I very much doubt i would be able to handle this, but it becomes virtually impossible to handle when the screen is perma-frozen due to all the action going on.

Point is, in my BGT games everyone outside joins the fun. However, Raemon and his cronies inside Tazok's tent stay where they are. I've never seen them leave the tent and attack me.

Any idea what causes this and what i could do to remedy it (apart from dropping Khivan from my party)?

I doubt it's an install issue, but here's my Weidu log anyway:

It's intentional that, if the bandit camp goes hostile, the Iron Throne mooks in the tent join the fun. I did it this way partly for realism (these guys are going to be sitting pretty in their tent while there's a war on outside?!) and partly so that the "sneak in" strategy doesn't get unfairly disadvantaged.

Come to that, when it comes right down to it you're advised by all and sundry not to pick a fight at the bandit camp. If you do anyway, that's fair enough, but it's in-game reasonable that you should expect to fight everyone.

Having said all that, if for whatever reason (different take on realism? different take on balance) you hate the idea of Raemon et al boiling out of the tent, you can override it at the console (warning: not tested). Before you arrive at the camp, do

SetGlobal("DMWWRaemonOutside","GLOBAL",9)

That should prevent them spawning... not my cup of tea, but ultimately you're welcome to play SCS however you like.

It's obviously not intentional that your screen freezes for ten seconds. I don't know what's driving the slowdown: your install looks fairly manageable. "Defragment" tends to be the best advice to people who experience severe slowdowns; it's a minority, but persistent, experience on SCS installs.

biffing the override is highly recommended.

Weird thing is, it does not happen in my BWP - which uses BGT - install. There only the guys outside join the fray. It happens only in the Tutu install. Still, i should be able to manage it, if it wasn't for the horrible slow down.

Biffing sounds like a good suggestion.(it's certainly not due to disk fragmentation).

Btw: not faulting your reasoning about the realism here, David. It's just that Khivan takes matters in his own hands and i'm unable to stop him. I'll try the biffing and if that does not help, i'll drop Khivan from my party.

Thanks for the fast replies and the suggestions.

You've been taken to the Camp by Teven or Raiken, right? You might want to try the other approach: kill Teven and Raiken and enter the Camp normally.

Might try that if the biffing doesn't help. But if i understand David correctly, they'll still all come after me and my screen will freeze again. Still, no harm in trying. Thanks.

Edit: neither biffing, nor defragmenting, nor entering the camp normally helped. Still the same problem. Dropped Khivan from my party and had Raiken take me there again. As soon as Tazok leaves: same problem, even though no one goes hostile. No idea what's causing it, especially since this is the only area where a slow down like this happens.

i've got a good guess what's causing the problem but not where it is specifically.

scs's scripts do a ton of stuff initially, potion allotment and spell preps mostly. if you enter an area with only a few npc's, this might range from unnoticeable to a little hiccup of lag. what sounds like is happening with you is a spawn loop offscreen where an unchecked number of bad guys are getting spawned in and those initial script blocks are bogging things down. could be a weird area or creature script conflict.

That command doesnt seem to work.

Depends what version you're on, but probably not: lag levels seem pretty variable and cause serious problems for a small minority of people but there's not a lot I can do about them. Defragmenting and Biffing can work; using the Enhanced Edition also helps a lot.

EDIT: Solved! I found out how to biff, and it worked. Sorry to have troubled you, and thanks for the pound-for-pound biggest improvement to my BG1-experience! :)

I ONLY lag in the bandit camp, and for a few seconds upon entry in other areas (which is why I thought the explanation provided here sounded like a good one).

I'm on an SSD, so I don't think defraggin' will help much. How do I biff?

The Enhanced Edition won't support my mods AFAIK.
