Ulcaster's ghost

I'm playing Baldur's Gate for the first time using EasyTutu. I've just cleared the Ulcaster ruins in Chapter 4 and picked up the book that Ulcaster's ghost asked for. However, when I go back up to the surface, the ghost is nowhere to be found. I've seen him milling about while I was clearing the area before going underground, but nothing since I've come back up.

I've looked around for answers and I've seen that other people have run into this problem. I know Ulcaster has an erratic schedule. But I've CTRL+T'ed my way through almost 2 entire days, and he was nowhere to be seen. Not at his usual location and nowhere else in the ruins. I've tried panning the camera around, but I don't hear anything that could indicate his presence. I've rested several times, both inside and outside the ruins, snooped around every corner, the local fauna respawned several times, and he's still not there. I've tried going to other areas and coming back, still no dice. I've even tried to CLUA him in, but the creature code I'm using is either incorrect, or I'm doing something wrong, because it's telling me that the file does not exist.

So I'm at a bit of a loss here. Is this a bug, or could this be caused by a mod conflict? I've installed all my mods using an installation guide I found on this site, so they *should* all have been installed properly and in the correct order, but you never know...

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Yep, that's the place where I've been looking, but still no luck. I've CTRL+T'ed to the hours where he's supposed to appear one more time while standing right next to the spot and nothing.

That last line and the bunch of "recently uninstalled" stuff at the top is due to my re-running the NPC Kits mod in an attempt to change Khalid's class and realising I hadn't assigned one to Alora. I'm not sure if that could cause problems or not.

As for checking the area script, how would I go about doing that?

It might - that's odd to see in the log. You might consider using Level 1 NPCs instead - it's a little more dynamic for assigning kits etc. (and goes toward the end of the install).
As for checking the area script, how would I go about doing that?
Get an editor like Near Infinity or DLTCEP and open up that file (_ar3900.bcs) - copy and paste the contents here.

I'm afraid I'm a bit useless when it comes to technical things...I've installed both of these, but Near Infinity apparently doesn't recognise the file. As for DLTCEP, I can't figure out how to use it to locate the file. Search > Areas seems to be the logical way to go, but I can't make sense of the search options...

Sorry about this :)

Welp, 'tis a mystery...

I decided to keep a savefile right before exiting the ruins and just carry on with the game on another save. After clearing Gullykin and the Firewine Bridge areas, I decided to stop by Ulcaster on my way back to Beregost to sell some loot, just for a random check.

I did find Ulcaster this time around...Except he wasn't actually *in* the ruins. He'd wandered off all the way to a jutting part of the cliff left of the ruins. If I'd just walked around the ruins as I usually do, I would never have spotted him.

So I thought that maybe he'd been there all along and loaded up my old save to check...but no, he stubbornly stays gone in that one. I CTRL+T'ed a couple of times in that area, just to make sure, and nothing.

So at least, the problem randomly got solved, but I'm still puzzled as to what went wrong in the first place. I was wondering if it may have had something to do with the fact that there are actually 3 copies of the book he asked for? I found 2 more while looting bookshelves in Gullykin, and he accepted all 3 (meaning 3 x 1k Exp for the quest).

Anyway, thanks for the help! (even though I couldn't figure out how to use DLTCEP)

No, L1NPCs can go after everything else. It can mod the NPCs that EasyTutuNPCs already kitted (and is a lot more flexible).
Near Infinity apparently doesn't recognise the file.
Just drop it in your EasyTutu folder and it should work automatically. You may need to install the latest Java from java.com.

You want to go to Edit > Scripts then Load script and scroll down or search for _ar3900. Make sure you Setup your Tutu game first by pointing to the chitin.key where it's installed (the game type is BG2/ToB, assuming you have ToB).

Ok, thanks, I'll take a look.

Aha! Not only was I not doing the right procedure, I was also indicating the wrong game type (I disregarded the fact that Tutu also included BG2/ToB).

So here's the area script for _ar3900, for curiosity's sake:

So here's the area script for _ar3900, for curiosity's sake:
That is the standard Tutu script, so there's nothing preventing him from being there at those hours (unless he's dead). However, he does have the _andwalk script (random walk) which means he could've wandered off anywhere in the area.

In my BGT game, I was completely unable to find the Ulcaster ghost after exiting the School. Even after returning many days after, Ctrl+T'ing for several ingame days, clearing et exploring the area many times. I ended up summoning him again with the CLUA.

It should be possible (in theory) to find out exactly where he is in your save game. Open it with an editor (Near Infinity is probably easiest for this) and decompress the save, then open the .are file (fw3900.are for Tutu) and look for the actor (_ulcast.cre in Tutu). Then note his position and whether he's visible. You can also check his SPRITE_IS_DEADULCASTER global to see if he got killed somehow. Actually you can do that through the console even without an editor with the GetGlobal() command.

Does anybody know what GLOBAL variable records the completion of the Ulcaster quest?

I keep getting frustrated and wandering off before I can find the ghost to finish it, and the variable would be useful to know for a mod I'm working on...

EDIT:

Never mind - Infinity Explorer is my friend, and there isn't one.

Will post this query + answer in case anyone else, in the fullness of time, wishes to know for their own nefarious purposes.
