WeiDU: changing your install order?

Noob quesiton. It's possible the answer is floating around somewhere, but I've been unable to find it. Probably just lack the right vocab. =p

Anyways, the question!!

I have a lovely and functional BGT install with a few mods added for challenge (e.g., SCS 1 and 2). I'm interested, however, in both trying to build my own NPCs and trying out some custom NPCs. I suspect that NPC mods shouldn't be last in my mod ordering for all sorts of reasons, not least of which is that some of the mods tweak stats, spellbooks, and other good stuff.

When installing with WeiDU, can you request that a mod be inserted at a particular point in the installation ordering? Or is a fresh install required?

In advance, thanks for any time and help! I'm going to keep digging through WeiDU docs to see if I can find the answer in the meantime...

Well, you need to install the mods in the order you need them to be installed, manually--- and if you install any mods after starting a game(iow intent to use the previous savegames) there's only a handful of mods that do actually do that correctly, and none of the NPC add on mods are likely that kind, so you really need to start a new game. There's an automatic install procedure, but it's community maintained and not just Weidu based but a lot of other coding in it too.

As of install order, my advice is for you to open up the Weidu.log file with Notepad and copy/paste the text from there ... so we can judge ourselves.

For the most part, there isn't anything wrong with installing an NPC after everything else. It just won't be affected by anything that might have affected it. Most tweaks don't affect significantly affect NPCs. The NPC Banter Pack adds additional content between mod NPCs, but you probably don't have that if you don't have any NPCs. We'd need your WeiDU.log to really say what the effects would be.

The only way to insert something into your installation mid-way through your install order is to uninstall everything that should come after it, install it, then reinstall those things. You can partially automate this if you write down the component numbers of a mod you've installed, since you can make WeiDU install or uninstall a list of components from a mod in a single command.

Reinstalling is likely to screw up savegames. Installing new stuff probably won't, but depending on the mod, the mod content may or may not work properly.

Wow. This is the fastest, most on-topic reply I've ever received on an online forum. Thank you.

Some clarifications:

1. Haven't started my official playthrough yet. Just made some demo characters to test that my install was up and not exploding.

2. I do have some dialogue mods installed - in fact, I'm pretty confident I have mods installed that will make late NPC installs goofy. I tried to be savvy about my mod ordering (using the mod readmes, the BiG guide, and common sense) but would in no way be offended if I did it wrong anyways.

3. My WeiDU log:

I had imagined inserting some new NPCs (e.g., Amber, Sarah, Tyris from the G3 NPCs) right before the BG1 NPC pack. I was curious if I should start the install fresh to do this or if I could say "hey, WeiDU, please uninstall all the mods after this point, insert these, then reinstall the later mods remembering the options I picked". I'd like to try and make an NPC or two myself and so was hoping this might be possible for easy insert, test, edit, insert, test, edit, etc.

Thanks again!

I suspect some combo of the suggestions from Mike1072 and Azazello and hook71 might be what I want to pursue if I want to insert items in the future. Automated installing would ease the process at list. The tool hook71 referenced might even be applied to do just what I'm looking for... I think. Some toying will have to occur. =)

Alright, stringing your varied and fine suggestions together led me to a working solution. Plus I uninstall the WeiDU install process a bit better now. Yay! =)

For posterity (or for gentle mocking if this was ridiculous), here's what I did to "insert" my new mods into my install order without completely restarting from scratch.

1. The handy program hook71 linked to (http://www.shsforums...du-uninstaller/) nicely generates text for a FULL uninstallation or reinstallation of any mods installed via WeiDU (or, more specifically, recorded in the WeiDU log). I started by copying the full mod install text (a nice, automated way of creating the text for the *.bat files described by Azazello here: http://www.shsforums...ion-batch-file/) and creating an "installFull.bat" file. If I totally messed up my mod insertion plan I could at least recreate my old installation quickly.

2. Now I modified the generated uninstall script to remove mods up to the point where I wanted to insert my new mods. For instance, I wanted to insert the Amber NPC into my order and believed (following the BiG install ordering) that it should go prior to the Banter Pack. So I generated a script (copying selectively from the nice uninstall script created by PS Weidu (Un)Installer) like this, "installPreInsert.bat":

rem @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
rem Pre-Insertion Un-Installer
rem adapted from PS WeiDU
rem customised as needed for mod insertion
rem currently removes up through: banter pack (not UB)
rem NOTE: excludes music pack to avoid messing with exe
rem NOTE: double checked installed packages for NPC specific options
rem @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
SETUP-BG2-BIGGER-FONTS.exe --language 0 --uninstall
WIDESCREEN.exe --language 0 --uninstall
SETUP-ATWEAKS.exe --language 0 --uninstall
SETUP-BG2_TWEAKS.exe --language 0 --uninstall
SETUP-SCSII.exe --language 0 --uninstall

SETUP-SPELL_REV.exe --language 0 --uninstall
SETUP-UB.exe --language 0 --uninstall
SETUP-IEPBANTERS.exe --language 0 --uninstall
SETUP-BANTERPACK.exe --language 0 --uninstall

Note that I excluded the BGT music pack since it modifies the exe file and I didn't want to tinker with that more than I had to.

3. Now I needed a quick way to reinstall just the mods that I removed. So I generated a modified install script (copying from the PS WeiDU full install script) like this, "installPostInsert.bat":

rem @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
rem Post-Insertion Installer
rem adapted from PS WeiDU
rem customised as needed for mod insertion
rem current start: banter pack
rem current end: to end (bigger fonts)

4. Okay. So now I have a script to remove the mods after my desired insertion point and a script to reinstall those mods. As a last step, I double checked the mod readmes to insure that I wasn't missing any conflicts or special options for the mods I was inserting (e.g., if there was a special dialogue for Amber NPC that I had previously skipped because that mod wasn't installed).

I executed the uninstall script.

Installed the desired new mods (Amber, Sarah, and Tyris).

Executed the reinstall script.

And, voila! I should have a functional BGT install again with my new mods inserted. : )

Initial playtesting caused no computer explosions. If anything crashes as I proceed, I'll be sure to report back. Haha, can't say that this was much faster than just starting again from a fresh install... but I think it will be in the future now that I figured a strategy out.

Thanks all again for the suggestions!!

A bit overkill for the average user, but great for those getting serious about megainstalls.
Näh, try the BWS a bit and you see how short that falls, in the megainstalls, but it wasn't made for mega install, so it will definitely be worth it's weight in mouth fulls. :DNow I just wonder if you get the joke of bytes being bites and thus mouth full -s...

Well I never intended it to replace the big world AutoIt business, but if you have feedback or suggestions, or can provide me with a WeiDU.log from a megainstall where my program does not function properly, please let me know :) . I'm still working on improving a few things with it.

Well, it's not really a thing you would wish to do I bet, as you would then need to add in all the function and reinvent the wheel ...as the BWS does more than what's in the normal weidu.log, like installing the BWP Fixpack... which was until recently not a weidu mod at all, and it still kinda isn't.

Don't mind Jarno--he's just putting his foot in his mouth. As usual.

We still luv him though.:love:
