Unearthed Arcana present Tome & Blood: more options for arcane casters

Recommended Posts

I'm pleased to announce that Tome and Blood has been updated to version 0.8.40 1.0! in my branch of the mod.  In time I'll turn this post into a source of general information about the mod, for newcomers.  But for now I'll highlight the recent changes.

You can download the latest version of the mod here.

The Readme can be found here.

The more in-depth Readm for v0.7 can be found here.

COMPATIBILITY NOTES:

This mod was in many places designed to take advantage of engine improvements in the EE games - much of it is not designed for pre-EE TOB/BGT/Tutu games.

Note, this is all completely modular. You can install one component, or all of them, or any combination you like.

Here’s a breakdown of what is currently in the mod:

COMPONENT 20: Revised Dragon Disciples

Dragon Disciples are powerful sorcerers with dragons' blood somewhere in their lineage. Their magical talents bring out their draconic heritage, allowing them to cast powerful magical spells and exhibit dragon-like abilities.

  • d6 Hit Die. The Dragon Disciple rolls a d6 instead of a d4 whenever a new hit die is earned.
  • Elemental Affinity. Dragon Disciples are attuned to one of the following damage types: acid, cold, electricity, or fire. They gain a +50% bonus to resistance against that damage type and they also deal +25% more damage of the selected type.
  • Scales. While not wearing armor, the Dragon Disciple may subtract their charisma modifier from their base armor class.
  • Reduced Spellcasting. The Dragon Disciple gains one fewer spell slot for each spell level they can cast.

COMPONENT 25: Magus - sorcerer kit

A student of both arcane knowledge and martial prowess, a Magus blends together spell and steel to devastating effect. The most defining quality of a magus is their ability to cast complicated arcane spells while wearing even the heaviest armors.

  • d8 Hit Die. The Magus rolls a d8 instead of a d4 whenevera new Hit Die is earned.
  • Specialization. The Magus may achieve, but not exceed, Specialization in any melee weapon, as well as two-handed and single weapon styles.
  • Weapons and Armor. The Magus may use any melee weapon and wear any armor, including helmets.
  • Armored Caster. The Magus may cast spells whilewearing any kind of armor.
  • Reduced Spellcasting. The Magus gains one fewer spell slot for each spell level they can cast.
  • One-Handed Casting. The Magus suffers a -2 penalty tocasting speed and may not use shields.

COMPONENT 31: Favored Soul - sorcerer kit

Favoured Souls attribute their magical powers to the blessing of some divine being. This blessing grants them potent magical protections, as well as access to spells usually beyond the reach of Sorcerers.

  • Divine Spells. After character creation, the Favoured Soul may select a single divine sphere, granting them arcaneversions of the divine spells from the selected sphere.
  • Protected. The Favoured Soul is always under the effectsof a protection from evil spell, granting a +2 bonus to ArmorClass and saving throws against evil foes, as well as protection from summoned fiends.
  • Reduced Spellcasting. The Favoured Soul gains onefewer spell slot for each spell level they can cast.

COMPONENT 33: Sylvan Disciple - sorcerer kit

The capricious nature of the fey runs in the veins of Sylvan Sorcerers due to some long forgotten intermingling of fey blood or magic. These sorcerers are more emotional than most, prone to bouts of joy and rage.

  • Non-detectable. The Sylvan Disciple is always under the effects of a non-detection spell, providing immunity to detection via minor divination magic.
  • Feyblooded. The Sylvan Disciple has a +4 bonus to saves vs. spells and is immune to charm.
  • Reduced Spellcasting. The Sylvan Disciple gains one fewer spell slot for each spell level they can cast.

COMPONENT 35: Revenant Disciple - sorcerer kit

The taint of the grave runs through the families of Revenant Disciples. Perhaps one of their ancestors became a powerful lich or vampire, or maybe they were born dead before suddenly returning to life. Either way, the forces of death move through them and touch their every action.

  • d6 Hit Die. The Revenant Disciple rolls a d6 instead of a d4 whenever a new Hit Die is earned.
  • Immunities. The Revenant Disciple is immune to sleep and death magic.
  • Deathly Resilience. The Revenant Disciple has a +4 bonus to saves vs. death.
  • Reduced Spellcasting. The Revenant Disciple gains one fewer spell slot for each spell level they can cast.

COMPONENT 37: Amorphous Disciple - sorcerer kit

The foul ichor of oozes runs through your veins, granting you magical control over noxious chemicals and slime, as well as a gift for changing your form to suit your needs.

  • Immunities. The Amorphous Disciple is immune to poison and disease.
  • Shifting Form. The Amorphous Disciple has a +4 bonus to saves vs. polymorph.
  • Oozeborn. The Amorphous Disciple is protected from hostile oozes, preventing the Amorphous Disciple from being attacked or targeted by oozes.
  • Reduced Spellcasting. The Amorphous Disciple gains one fewer spell slot for each spell level they can cast.

COMPONENT 40: Revised Specialists

This component defines specialists by what they can do, instead of by what they can't. Each specialist get some active or passive innate abilities that represent their mastery over their particular school of magic. Additionally, specialists gain the ability to spontaneously convert any of their memorized spells into a spell from their specialty school of one level lower.

COMPONENTS 51, 52, 53, 54: Innate Metamagic

These components make spell sequencers and contingencies into innate abilities (Chain Contingency becomes an HLA) so they don't cost spell slots - you can freely "refill" a sequencer right after you use it. However, "filling" them with spells still uses the spell slots associated with those spells (this part is just like the unmodded version). These four components differ according to how you get metamagic:

  • automatically as you level up for mages and sorcerers
  • automatically as you level up but excluding sorcerers
  • learned from scrolls and sorcerers can learn them their usual way
  • learned from scrolls and sorcerers canot learn them

If you later install the Arcanist kit, or Multiclass Sorcerers, or 5E-style Spellcasting, then you will be able to "fill" sequencers and contingencies with any spell you know, rather than spells you have memorized, doing so will not expend any memorized slots.

COMPONENTS 66: Innate Find Familiar

This component makes Find Familiar an innate ability and replaces its scrolls with scrolls of Magic Missile.

COMPONENTS 71-72: Sorcerer Spell Switching

This component will give sorcerers, mana sorcerers, and multiclass sorcerers an innate ability which will open a dialogue and allow you to remove one known spell from your spellbook.  This will allow you to replace that spell with another spell of the same spell level.  In order for this to work, the spell-learning mechanism is moved from the level-up screens to an item ability - the same item ability already used by multiclass sorcerers.  You can choose to switch out spells once per level, or once per three levels.  Note, you cannot "save" uses of this ability.  If you don't switch any spells at 4th level and then you have two instances of the ability upon reaching 5th level, both of those instances will disappear when you switch out one spell.  Use it or lose it.

COMPONENT 80: Multiclass Sorcerers

What it says on the tin 😮

COMPONENT 82: Arcanist - wizard kit

This is a wizard kit that learns spells from scrolls, like any wizard.  Before resting, the Arcanist can use a "Prepare Spells" innate ability in order to fill memorization slots with chosen spells for the next day; upon waking, they will be able to cast those chosen spells spontaneously, like a sorcerer.  Those spells will be the spells you can cast each day, until the next time you use the "Prepare Spells" ability.

COMPONENT 95: Multiclass Specialists

This puts the specialist wizard kits into the fighter/mage, cleric/mage, and mage/thief class-kit menus wherever they are normally allowed for the player's chosen race.

I've got a question: if I install the additional spells from this component and the stat bonus overhaul from Scales of Balances, is it only charname getting the bonus or are all npcs (meaning the enemy mobs) getting it too?

Beside, that would mean a huge nerf to all these shorty saves. That would be very good.

...Good question. I honestly don’t know. But I don’t think it matters. Enemy casters are scripted to cast whatever they are going to cast. Some if them follow the rules, some of them don’t. As a player, you don’t know their kit, their level, their spellbooks, what they memorized that morning, or what inherent bonuses they might have picked up in their own adventuring careers. ;) Plus most enemies were coded by Bioware to have 9  9 9 9 9 9 stats (or 12s), and then given static bonuses to thac0/damage/AC/HP/whatever.  So stat bonuses for enemies are often meaningless.

In order to work, the TnB component increases the spell slots table by 2 across the board, so IF you use SCS, then theoretically all enemy mages will get 2 extra spells at every level. So that could be more challenging. But OTOH you wouldn’t notice increased limits unless they actually come close to hitting those limits, i.e. expend their entire spellbook. And if that happens you’re probably doing something wrong. 😆

The SoB bonuses are simpler, I believe they will apply to enemies, and that component even increases enemy stats to 17 in primary stats (STR for fighters, DEX for thieves, etc.) in case they have the lazy “all 9s” coding. (I think so at least... my memory’s a bit fuzzy.)

Just a heads-up: I was focused on the outward, functional aspects of familiars - what abilities they have, which animals they are, etc.  But I guess i neglected some under-the hood stuff like what they say to you in dialogue, and what their backpack icon looks like.  So be aware, the spider and rat familiar will talk to you and appear in your backpack like an imp and quasit, respectively.  For now they'll need a bit of extra suspension of disbelief.  I'll fix it soon.

Alright, I've updated the first post to discuss game compatibility.

I've also updated the mod, to version 0.8.42.  The biggest change is compatibility with Spell Revisions v4v17+.  (And to be clear, for the two mods to work well together, this now requires SR v4b17+.)

There is also a small bit of bugfixing, and some improved compatibility with Faiths & Powers v0.78.9, and the "Choose-Your-Own-Familiar" component will now install on IWDEE.

Hi, thanks for the constant updates, seems like TnB and FnP and MnG are getting even more awsome every time i check 😁

Wanted to point out a small issue: the Multiclass Sorcerers component fails to install because it lacks the "d5_base.spl" file from Might and Guile, which of course comes later during installation..

#ERROR: Unix.Unix_error(20, "stat", "might_and_guile/lib/d5_base.spl")

Fortunately, just creating the might_and_guile/lib/ folder inside BG2 folder and pasting inside the file solved the problem.

On a side note, i got a few of these messages:

#WARNING: Internal ability name too long [D5MSNSEQ]. Skipping.

A couple of bug reports:

The find familiar ability doesn't work on my install with the latest version.

After the first cast, the familiar choosing window pops up, i can select one, but the 'spells' tab remains at 0/1. after clicking 'done', a few seconds pass and the message box goes like this:

"Find Familiar: Charname

Pseudodragon: Charname

Fairy dragon: Charname

..(and so on, with every familiar)

Only the protagonist may cast find familiar."

It almost seems like the spell is trying to give me every single familiar at once..This happens with any kind of mage, base, specialist, vanilla multiclass, or one of the multiclass from MnG or FnP. I can then click on imbue familiar, and go through the dialog to choose the spell to use, and after i click, nothing happens.

Second: the arcane spells of the multiclass sorcerer/cleric actually behave like those of a regular cleric/mage. I tried with a couple of kits (sorcerer/waveservant of umberlee and sorcerer/stormbringer of talos), they had the regular mage spellbook with memorizable slots.

It almost seems like the spell is trying to give me every single familiar at once.

That is correct.  It's not actually trying to give you every familiar, it is applying a different spell for each one.  I think it is casting some spells with opcode 206, that will prevent you in the future from choosing a different familiar than the one you choose now.  I suppose I could change those strings if they are confusing... but so far you are describing the mod working as intended.

Quote

Only the protagonist may cast find familiar."

.This happens with any kind of mage, base, specialist, vanilla multiclass, or one of the multiclass from MnG or FnP. I can then click on imbue familiar, and go through the dialog to choose the spell to use, and after i click, nothing happens.

I don't mean to sound too much like Captain Obvious, but... are you casting the spell with the protagonist?  I don't have a ton of experience with familiars, but isn't this just how the game engine works?

As far as imbuing... yeah, if you don't have a familair then there is nothing to imbue.

Did you use the "initialize sorcerer casting" innate ability?

Which game are you playing, btw?

Sorry for reporting the normal behaviour 😅

I'm playing EET with the latest versions, so far I've been testing a few kits by creating new characters and starting at lv 1 from candlekeep, no followers.

As for the cleric/mages... there is no 'initialize ability'. The sorcerer/fighter and sorcerer/thief both get one, and it works perfectly with the UI and all. Just now i created a sorcerer/doomguide: in the special abilities menu he has find familiar, disable autohaste (from TA, I think) and memorize spells. Clicking on the mage spellbook I get, well, a mage spellbook with  fillable spellslots.

Imma do a captain obvious back at you.. isn't it possible to see which game I'm on by the weidu.log I put in spoiler tags? 🙃

Weidu.log does not show which game is being modded. Especially before, when there were more differences between BGEE/BG2EE/IWDEE, it always drove me crazy. It’s one of my longstanding gripes/feature requests for Weidu

Not having the initialize ability sounds like it’s an FnP issue. Should be an easy fix.
