Unearthed Arcana present Tome & Blood: more options for arcane casters

Recommended Posts

I'm pleased to announce that Tome and Blood has been updated to version 0.8.40 in my branch of the mod.  In time I'll turn this post into a source of general information about the mod, for newcomers.  But for now I'll highlight the recent changes.

You can download the latest version of the mod here.

A (very) rough Readme can be found here.

Version 0.8.40 is now almost completely compliant with DavidW''s principles of encapsulation and immutability.  (I only haven't made the ALWAYS block comliant yet.) What does that mean for you, the player?  Pretty much nothing.  But it's good design!

COMPATIBILITY NOTES:

The 0.8 series has only been tested in the EE v2.5 engine.  This is not designed for pre-EE TOB/BGT/Tutu games.  Best I can tell, the spell school changes, the general spell tweaks (but not the clone or invisibility tweaks), the armored casting for bards, the first four innate sequencer options, the first and third cantrip options, and the innate find familiar component might work on the old engine.  But, no promises.

There are a lot of different components to the mod at this point, so I have organized them into three categories: 1] spell tweaks; 2] new and revised kits; and 3] deeper tweaks to various game mechanics.  You'll have the option to choose which categories you want to consider when you install the mod. Note, this is all completely modular. You can install one component, or all of them, or any combination you like.

Here’s a breakdown of what is currently in the mod:

COMPONENT 11: Rebalanced Spell Schools

This component changes the school of various spells, to make sure there is at least one spell at each level in each school, and that specialists of different schools are better-balanced against one another.

COMPONENT 12: General Spell Tweaks

Buffs to Symbol: Fear, Shapechange, Black Blade of Disaster, and Energy Drain. More to come, maybe.

COMPONENT 13: Revised Illusionary Clones

This component makes Mislead and Project Image work just as Simulacrum does, except the clones can use more magic as you go up in level, and the caster gets progressively better invisibility at the same time:

  • 5th Level: Mislead - clone is a pure image, cannot attack or cast spells. Caster becomes normal invisible - NOT super-Mislead-invisible.
  • 6th Level: Shadow Clone - clone has 40% hit points and -7 to thac0 and caster level, can cast only 1st-level arcane spells, cannot cast divine spells.
  • 7th Level: Lesser Simulacrum - clone has 60% hit points and -5 to thac0 and caster level, can cast up to 4th-level arcane spells, cannot cast divine spells.
  • 8th Level: Simulacrum - clone has 75% hit points and -3 to thac0 and caster level, and can cast any spells.
  • 9th Level: Projected Simulacrum - cast Simulacrum on another creature.

COMPONENT 14: Revised Invisiblity

This component merges the effects of Invisibility and Sanctuary (you can now loot chests and open doors while invisible :) ). The upshot is, if you cast 2nd-level Detect Invisible, the caster will be able to see and target invisible enemies but other party members who cannot see invisible cannot. It also replaces the 3rd-level arcane spell "Detect Illusions" with the 3rd-level divine spell "Invisibility Purge."

COMPONENT 20: Revised Dragon Disciples

Adds new Dragon Disciple kits to the game, matching different varieties of dragon species.

COMPONENT 25: Magus

Adds the Magus sorcerer kit to the game, which can cast spells in heavy armor and use more weapons than a normal sorcerer.

COMPONENT 31: Favored Soul

Adds the Favored Soul sorcerer kit to the game. This kit can choose a sphere of divine spells to cast, in addition to its normal arcane spell selection.

COMPONENT 33: Sylvan Disciple

Adds the Sylvan Disciple sorcerer kit to the game. This kit is born of the fey folk, with immunities to charms and minor divination magic.

COMPONENT 35: Revenant Disciple

Adds the Revenant Disciple sorcerer kit to the game. This kit carries the taint of the grave, with immunities to Sleep and death magic.

COMPONENT 37: Amorphous Disciple

Adds the Amorphous Disciple sorcerer kit to the game. This kit is kind to oozes of all sorts, with immunities to poison and disease.

COMPONENT 40: Revised Specialists

This component defines specialists by what they can do, instead of by what they can't. All specialists can cast all spells - there are no opposition schools. And each specialist get some active or passive innate abilities that represent their mastery over their particular school of magic. Finally, specialists gain the ability to spontaneously convert any of their memorized spells into a spell from their specialty school of one level lower.

COMPONENT 45: Arcane Crafting

This component allows wizards to create scrolls, wands, and potions, by expending XP and/or gold.

COMPONENT 48: Armored Casting for Bards

Bards can cast spells in leather armor.

COMPONENTS 51, 52, 53, 54, 55: Innate Metamagic

The first four of these components make spell sequencers and contingencies into innate abilities (Chain Contingency becomes an HLA) so they don't cost spell slots; but "filling" them with spells still uses the spell slots associated with those spells. These four components differ according to how you get metamagic (automatically as you level up, or learned from scrolls) and whether or not sorcerers can use metamagic spells.

The 5th version leaves sequencers and contingencies as spells you must memorize, but when you cast them, you "fill" them with any spell you know, without expending any memorization slots.

COMPONENTS 61, 62, 63: Cantrips

Component 61 allows mages and sorcerers to use one cantrip as an innate ability with unlimited uses.

Component 62 allows mages and sorcerers and bards to cast an unlimited number of 1st-level spells without needing to rest. Some spells are slightly rebalanced to account for this.

Component 63 gives you a "wand" that you equip in a weapon slot, which allows you to use one of eight cantrips as item abilities with unlimited uses.

COMPONENTS 66-69: Revised Familiars

Component 66 makes Find Familiar an innate ability and replaces its scrolls with scrolls of Magic Missile.

Component 67 allows you to choose which familiar you want (from a slightly modified list) instead of being bound by your alignment. Currently, the available familiars are Pseudodragon, Ferret, Rabbit, Cat, Spider, and Rat. Each has its own special skills and abilities, and each provides a different small passive benefit to the caster:

  • Pseudodragon: can cast Blur, Color Spray, and Cure Light Wounds once per 3 turns.  Flies, so is immune to Grease, Entangle, and Web.  Caster regenerates 1 hp/round.
  • Ferret: 90% Pick Pockets skill.  Once per turn, can create a small-AoE Nauseating Aura which causes 2-point combat penalties and a 25% spell failure chance in enemies. Caster has +1 CON.
  • Rabbit: 90% Find Traps skill.  Can burrow into the ground to escape danger, just like the Shadowstep ability.  Caster is immune to Slow.
  • Cat: 90% Stealth skill.  Is immune to being revealed by divinations, similar to a thief with a Cloak of Nondetection.  Caster has +1 DEX.
  • Spider: can shoot a Web at a single target once per 5 rounds.  Bite can cause 3 extra points of poison damage over one round.  Immune to being stuck in Webs.  Caster gets an extra chance to save to avoid poisons.
  • Rat: can summon 1d6 more rats to assist in battle once per day.  Bite can cause disease (reduced STR and 25% chance of spell failure) for a couple rounds.  Caster has +1 INT.

Component 68 allows you to imbue your familiar with up to five spells (one each from spell levels 1 through 5, from your known spells). The familiar will be able to cast each spell as an innate ability, once every three turns.

Component 69 eliminates the hp damage and CON loss you take when a familiar dies. So you can re-summon/revive the familiar without penalty, once per day. As a consequence, this also eliminates the flat hit point bonus you get from summoning a familiar. Instead, you will get a 15% boost to your max hit points, whenever your familiar is out of your pack and within your general vicinity.

COMPONENT 75: Ability Score-Based Bonus Spells

This component gives bonus spells to wizards for high INT scores, and to bards and sorcerers for high CHA scores. The bonuses go up to +2 spell slots per spell level, up to 7th-level spells for wizards, up to 6th-level spells for bards, and up to 5th-level spells for sorcerers.

Any mod component that changes the game's spell tables (such as, say, Tweaks Anthology) should be installed BEFORE this component.

COMPONENT 79: Sorcerer Spell Selection by Dialogue

This component has sorcerers learn spells by way of a dialogue instead of via the vanilla GUI interface, and (I believe) zeroes out SRCSPLKN.2da. This enables the creation of custom spell lists for different sorcerer kits. However, if I understand correctly, as of TnB 0.7, the added kits do not use custom lists. (I think.)

COMPONENT 80: Multiclass Sorcerers

What it says on the tin 😮

Heh heh yeah.  Actually the new Rat familiar can already do that!

I've got a question: if I install the additional spells from this component and the stat bonus overhaul from Scales of Balances, is it only charname getting the bonus or are all npcs (meaning the enemy mobs) getting it too?

Beside, that would mean a huge nerf to all these shorty saves. That would be very good.

...Good question. I honestly don’t know. But I don’t think it matters. Enemy casters are scripted to cast whatever they are going to cast. Some if them follow the rules, some of them don’t. As a player, you don’t know their kit, their level, their spellbooks, what they memorized that morning, or what inherent bonuses they might have picked up in their own adventuring careers. ;) Plus most enemies were coded by Bioware to have 9  9 9 9 9 9 stats (or 12s), and then given static bonuses to thac0/damage/AC/HP/whatever.  So stat bonuses for enemies are often meaningless.

In order to work, the TnB component increases the spell slots table by 2 across the board, so IF you use SCS, then theoretically all enemy mages will get 2 extra spells at every level. So that could be more challenging. But OTOH you wouldn’t notice increased limits unless they actually come close to hitting those limits, i.e. expend their entire spellbook. And if that happens you’re probably doing something wrong. 😆

The SoB bonuses are simpler, I believe they will apply to enemies, and that component even increases enemy stats to 17 in primary stats (STR for fighters, DEX for thieves, etc.) in case they have the lazy “all 9s” coding. (I think so at least... my memory’s a bit fuzzy.)

Just a heads-up: I was focused on the outward, functional aspects of familiars - what abilities they have, which animals they are, etc.  But I guess i neglected some under-the hood stuff like what they say to you in dialogue, and what their backpack icon looks like.  So be aware, the spider and rat familiar will talk to you and appear in your backpack like an imp and quasit, respectively.  For now they'll need a bit of extra suspension of disbelief.  I'll fix it soon.

StD, you might want to update the readme etc to indicate that this is a EE only mod ! Cause there's no sorcerer kits in the regular BG2... Let alone any other mongrels.

So things like this won't happen.

Alright, I've updated the first post to discuss game compatibility.

I've also updated the mod, to version 0.8.42.  The biggest change is compatibility with Spell Revisions v4v17+.  (And to be clear, for the two mods to work well together, this now requires SR v4b17+.)

There is also a small bit of bugfixing, and some improved compatibility with Faiths & Powers v0.78.9, and the "Choose-Your-Own-Familiar" component will now install on IWDEE.

Hi, thanks for the constant updates, seems like TnB and FnP and MnG are getting even more awsome every time i check 😁

Wanted to point out a small issue: the Multiclass Sorcerers component fails to install because it lacks the "d5_base.spl" file from Might and Guile, which of course comes later during installation..

#ERROR: Unix.Unix_error(20, "stat", "might_and_guile/lib/d5_base.spl")

Fortunately, just creating the might_and_guile/lib/ folder inside BG2 folder and pasting inside the file solved the problem.

On a side note, i got a few of these messages:

#WARNING: Internal ability name too long [D5MSNSEQ]. Skipping.

Thanks for the heads up. That’s such an easy error to miss because my game folders tend to have dozens of mods in them when I do testing. I’ll look at that stuff and post a fix soon.

A couple of bug reports:

The find familiar ability doesn't work on my install with the latest version.

After the first cast, the familiar choosing window pops up, i can select one, but the 'spells' tab remains at 0/1. after clicking 'done', a few seconds pass and the message box goes like this:

"Find Familiar: Charname

Pseudodragon: Charname

Fairy dragon: Charname

..(and so on, with every familiar)

Only the protagonist may cast find familiar."

It almost seems like the spell is trying to give me every single familiar at once..This happens with any kind of mage, base, specialist, vanilla multiclass, or one of the multiclass from MnG or FnP. I can then click on imbue familiar, and go through the dialog to choose the spell to use, and after i click, nothing happens.

Second: the arcane spells of the multiclass sorcerer/cleric actually behave like those of a regular cleric/mage. I tried with a couple of kits (sorcerer/waveservant of umberlee and sorcerer/stormbringer of talos), they had the regular mage spellbook with memorizable slots.

It almost seems like the spell is trying to give me every single familiar at once.

That is correct.  It's not actually trying to give you every familiar, it is applying a different spell for each one.  I think it is casting some spells with opcode 206, that will prevent you in the future from choosing a different familiar than the one you choose now.  I suppose I could change those strings if they are confusing... but so far you are describing the mod working as intended.

Quote

Only the protagonist may cast find familiar."

.This happens with any kind of mage, base, specialist, vanilla multiclass, or one of the multiclass from MnG or FnP. I can then click on imbue familiar, and go through the dialog to choose the spell to use, and after i click, nothing happens.

I don't mean to sound too much like Captain Obvious, but... are you casting the spell with the protagonist?  I don't have a ton of experience with familiars, but isn't this just how the game engine works?

As far as imbuing... yeah, if you don't have a familair then there is nothing to imbue.
