Since this has been mentioned a few times in public already, I thought I'd go ahead and make a formal announcement. G3 started experimenting with using a wiki for collaboration on multiple-author projects--specifically, a place to pool Divine Remix code and allow all of us to work on the same document at once. (For those of you who know what CVS is: we don't have access to set one up, and it's probably too formal for the scale and scope of projects we're discussing anyway.)

 

Encouraged by its success, we began moving some additional projects to the wiki for easier collaboration (currently 7 projects, plus G3/Tutu Tweaks coming soon). While intended primarily for G3 mods and modders, we have added a couple of community projects--Detectable Spells and the BG2 Fixpack--and a common code page, where we pool common code used by multiple mods. The advantage is that anyone can modify and improve our code, so it really allows us to leverage our individual coding talents.

 

For those of you that may not know what a wiki is, it's an online collaboration tool. Anyone can create pages, or edit existing pages, through a simple to use interface and formatting rules. The wiki automatically tracks changes, so we can roll back vandalism, or you can track how something has changed over time. Each page also includes an attached discussion page, so folks can talk about the contents of specific pages.

 

The wiki is open for everyone to browse, comment, and use with one caveat--as it was originally built for G3 modders, forum registration is required to browse and edit the wiki. The wiki username and password are the same as your forum username and password. We are trying to keep the wiki focused on actual code, so please refrain from posting gereral realms lore and history--Wikipedia is probably a better home for it.

 

I would also like to invite anyone to contribute code to the common code page--if we can standardize a few libraries, and keep track of which mod uses which chunks, we can greatly simplify intra-mod compatibility. I'd also like to invite anyone, especially non-G3ers, to feel free to use the wiki as a development platform for your own mods. But, keep in mind that the wiki is open, so don't post of you don't want it shared.

A couple of updates: the wiki provides an RSS feed of recent changes. Those of you with browsers that can auto-detect RSS feeds will notice you now have a third feed available while browsing the site.

 

Also, a few members have had problems logging into the wiki. The wiki authentication strips out a few characters in passwords that the forum software allows--the net effect being that you can't log into the wiki with your forum password if you use one of these characters. Specifically, a ! and a . were causing issues. If you experience this problem, you can temporarily change your forum password to log into the wiki.

My Yahoo! doesn't seem to like that url. It comes up with an error. I figured maybe it was ".rss" at the end, but while that worked, all it did was bring up an RSS for the forums.

with Idobeks permission, why not include also the long ago started BG1 Fixpack ?

The RSS issue is solved--since anonymous users couldn't see that page, feed readers were getting denied access. I never noticed the issue since I use RSS feeds in my browser. You may need to drop and re-add it from My Yahoo! to get the correct feed title.

 

As for the BG1 Fixpack, that's up to Alec.

I dont seem to be able to log into the wiki. it said there is no such user as "Dreamer S&M" while Im pretty sure Im using that very username 'n the right password too. is it restricted to G3 staff only? in that case nvm.

Wikis are more restrictive in their name spaces since every member gets a personal page. Characters such as underscores and ampersands are encoded before being submitted to the forum database for authorization, which is why some members may have trouble accessing the wiki. There are workarounds; just contact me.

 

And for those wondering, Dreamer Sasha was Dreamer S&M until a few moments ago, by her choice. You don't have to change your user name to get access.

I broke something yesterday (the stylesheet was disassociated) which made it look horrible for about 30 minutes or so before it was fixed. The skin is, AFAICT, back the way it was before. Perhaps the broken pages got cached?

Shouldn't have been. The main page got today's updates, and the stylesheet gave the accusation. Full reload (Shift+reload) didn't restore it, nor did switching skins (the other skins did work, but g3main was still broken when switching back to default).

 

Whatever. Fixed now.
