Help for Mac-users

I don't know much about running a megamod on Macs, but I know, that you can't use our BiG World Fixpack, which you need for some mods if you want to install them. Ascension and BG2 Fixpack is an example, but more important is, that you shouldn't install BG2 Fixpack with Baldurdash togother without the BiG World Fixpack. And I don't know if a mod must be made Mac compatible. You can install all G3 mods on a Mac, but I don't know if you can install SoS or CtB on Macs. Here we need someone who can give us some advices, but for your install, take BG2 Fixpack only and don't use it together with Baldurdash.

Leomar,

I can convert almost any Weidu mod to the Mac by using a couple of conversion programs developed by Steve and Loriel. So I figured that I might actually be able to get BWP up and running, but I hadn't gotten that far before problems started cropping up. In my previous installation I'd run a couple of test games without any problems although SoS and CtB weren't part of the installation. So I'm thinking that they might be the cause of my current issue, plus I vaguely remember issues with font displays with them, although I'm not able to find any references now.

Error message from new installation: only Ascension is installed.

I've gotten everything up and running again after going back to ground zero. Did a smaller install with none of the major quest mods to get some experience with SR, Item Revisions and SCS II. The game works, but when I try and add another mod I get this message:

Anybody know what's going on and how to fix it? Dropped in clean chitin.key and made no difference.

I think this is caused by WeiDU opening too many files during the auto-update check. You can disable the check with the --noautoupdate flag:

weidu --noautoupdate ...

or, for mod XXX:

Setup-XXX --noautoupdate

If you're running on a Unix/Linux/MacOSX system, you can alternatively type this on a commandline shell:

ulimit -n 2048

and then type the commands to load the mods.

In the online MacEasyTutu install guide it says this:

VIII. Fixpacks: (Baldurdash etc.)

The EasyTutu distribution already includes both BG 1 & BG 2 Baldurdash fixes, so unlike conventional Tutu there is no need to install either. The BG2 Fixpack should not be installed on top of a MacEasyTutu installation at this time. Relevant Fixpack changes are being implemented by Macready into the core EasyTutu distributions.

But, the last MacEasyTutu update is from 2007, meanwhile, The BG2 Fixpack has updates as recent as this year.

So is installing the BG2 Fixpack still not possible with MacEasyTutu? And does this mean mac users can't benefit from the myriad of fixes which were implemented since 2007?

If this warning is indeed outdated... are there other significant portions of the install guide that are no longer relevant? I'm about to do my very first TuTu install of any kind on a PPC iMac running 10.5.8

Would love the advice, tips, and warnings of any other mac users that have forded these waters before.

Thanks in advance for your wisdom and insights!

Hi,

Short answer: it's still a "bad idea" to install the BG2 Fixpack on a MET-ed game.

Slightly longer answer: the key "core files" of MET have been updated independently of the guide (but the links in the guide are still correct); they correspond to the May '08 release details here: http://www.usoutpost31.com/easytutu/changelog.html (yes, there is a PC version newer than that, but thankfully the changes from the second newest to newest version are minor, as that change log shows. I've been "away" from the IE for a fairly long while now, but I'll make a note to ask Macready to update those Mac archives, though perhaps he'll notice this thread and do so before then). The May '08 release was incidentally the first one to feature the incorporation of all relevant (i.e. relevant to BG1-in-2) fixes from the BG2 Fixpack. There have been two new releases of the Fixpack since then, but only one of them had any real content changes, and judging from the changelog, few if any of those new fixes are relevant for Tutu. At worst, they would be of trivial importance to Tutu, AFAICT.

Answer from a slightly different angle: I'm not aware of any significant info in the guide being outdated at this point in time. I played through Tutu using the current (May '08) MET files (and installation method) last year, without any real issues surfacing.

Hope that helps.

(This, by the way, is/was the traditional home of Mac IE gaming, but it was overrun by spambots this spring, and it's effectively still recovering, all the old useful posts/info being currently inaccessible)

I know this isn't the file you were referring to, but just wanted to give a heads up on at least one broken link thus far...

The versiontracker hosted ToB patch link is no longer working, and a search there turned up no results.

I did however find it here.

Okay, am in the thick of a "Unconventional MacEasyTutu" install (Hand copied data and movies from PC discs) and have hit a few snags. Though none fatal... thus far.

Since I'm hand copying the Data and Movie files directly from the uninstalled BG1discs... I don't have a "music" folder in an install location as described in optional step VI.

I'd like to play the original music if possible, but don't see a music folder anywhere on the discs. Any idea where I can find the music either on the discs or elsewhere online?

During the Terminal stage of step VII (installing TuTuFix v17) after patching I hit continue and began installing some of the optional components. After "hooded thieves and bards" the only option was to exit. The readme file that opened shows a heck of a lot more components though. Are they not part of the OS X TutuFix, are they already installed in the core MET, or will I have an option to add them at a later point? (BG2 style world map, remove spells not in BG1, journal entries etc.)

And finally... downloaded the linked degreenifier folder from the MET Guide, and when I launch the .command file I get a dialog stating "The file could not be executed because you do not have appropriate access privileges." Opening the "get info" shows "you can read and write". Tried locking and unlocking, and tried giving R&W privs to staff and everyone to no good effect. (this is a single user computer anyway)

Thanks for any insights you can offer. My stalled installation awaits your infinite wisdom! :D

update: after a "sudo chmod 755" in the terminal on the degreenifier it installed just fine.

Now I'm getting a permission denied message in the terminal when attempting the Setup-EasyTuTuNPCKits.command file though:

Macintosh-2:~ NuMystic$ /EasyTutu/Setup-EasyTutuNPCKits.command ; exit;

/EasyTutu/Setup-EasyTutuNPCKits.command: line 5: ./Setup-EasyTutuNPCKits: Permission denied

logout

Don't know if this will help or not but doing a permissions check via the terminal gives this:

Macintosh-2:~ NuMystic$ ls -al /EasyTutu/Setup-EasyTutuNPCKits.command

-rwxr-xr-x 1 NuMystic staff 82 Sep 28 2006 /EasyTutu/Setup-EasyTutuNPCKits.command

Okay much bigger problem than the issues above.

Since I made it through the core install and the only major issues were mod related I decided to try launching the game to see if it was working.

All I get is a full screen image saying Baldur's Gate - insert expansion disc - press esc to cancel.

Since I am doing the "Unconventional MacEasyTutu" install... the only expansion disc I have for BG1 is TotSC which is a PC disc. Having the disc image mounted on my desktop when launching doesn't seem to do anything either.

I thought with a TuTu install all of the data and movies are installed on the hard drive anyway without any need to insert or swap discs?

Can anyone tell me how to get past the insert disc screen? Thanks!

edit: Realized that since the engine is BG2 it might be asking for the ToB disc. Mounted the disc and still no love.

Hi again,

Regarding the music files; I don't have a set of PC BG1 discs handy, so I can't say for sure where you'll find them if not in a folder titled music or similar. You should be able to safely start a game now and switch the music files later, though, if you find where they are on the disc(s); the place of the "music switching" in the installation order is not crucial.

Re: Tutufix, it automatically detects EasyTutu installations, auto-skipping certain components if EasyTutu is detected (because those components are redundant on such an install). So, from what you write, it seems to be working correctly.

As for permissions denied etc. errors: entering "chmod +x <file>" and "chmod 777" <file> will usually eliminate them. The problems arise due to certain archivers/expanders not preserving flags properly.

Finally, about the "insert disc" screen: the disc it wants is the ToB expansion disc, not any BG1 disc. If you'd not installed ToB the disc to be used would be BG2's Disc 2. The reason for this is simple: though the BG2 data has been mostly replaced by BG1 data, the game is still BG2 - so the copy protection scheme remains that of BG2 as well.

Ah, I see from your edit that you've now tried the ToB disc without luck.... However, you say that you mounted it; do you mean that you mounted an image of it, or that you actually inserted the disc? Disk image mounters, or at least some of them, may not be able to make the game recognize them as a "proper" disk. Toast does work for this purpose, though, IIRC.

Thanks for all the feedback. We have progress!

I think I've got the degreenifier, NPCKits, and Spawn Randomizer installed now successfully. Can launch the game just fine after using a physical rather than virtual disc to mount the expansion.

Unfortunately it appears that the bg1npc project archive is missing a file? Downloaded a copy from both the Candadian and Gibberling sources (US Mirror is a dead link) and tried unarchiving using Stuffit, UnRarX, MacParDeluxe, and Unarchiver. None of them have a .tp2 file which the installer is clearly looking for:

** ERROR ** [sETUP-BG1NPC.TP2] not found.

Make sure that you have unpacked the archive correctly and

that you are not trying to run this file from inside an archive.[./setup-bg1npc] Using scripting style "BG2"

Any idea where I can get my hands on the missing .tp2 file for this mod? (it's actually the thing I am most looking forward to out of all the available mods)

Any chance the .tp2 file from the Linux build is interchangeable? After making this build from PC data files, a guy can dream. I do realize though that since this looks like it's an executable file this is probably not the case.
