Hi there. I'm currently making a run of Baldur's Gate Trilogy, no mega-mods. My weidu.log can be found at the bottom of the thread. My problem is that while all normal sounds play, characters make no sound. Also, chapter-screens, the prologue-screen for example, has no sounds. Movies have full sound, there are full environmentsounds, and I *think* there's music (not entirely sure).

I also have a small side-problem: On menu-screens and generally when on screens that are not the game-screen, squares of varying size outline my screen. They aren't too annoying, so this is problem I can live with. The sound-problem is far more disturbing.

Could anyone help me with this problem? My OS is Windows Vista 64bit.

NOTE: I don't know if it's relevant, but I have a similar problem with the game Dragonshard. Full sound and music, but characters make no sound when clicked on or in cutscenes. I don't care much about Dragonshard, but I'm really sad about this fact concerning Baldur's Gate :/

Hmm weird... did you patch both games?(v5512 and v26498)

Two things about the Vista;

1) I trust that you have done the installation to some other directory than the default 'program file' one, or you'll never .

2) And that you disables the User Account Control, at least while you changed the files.

To fix some of the sound and video problems, you might want to rerun the BGConfig.exe again and check that they are all right. If you have Nvidia GPU, the first post of this thread should help.

Never what? Anyway, I actually installed it to the default directory. It's in Program Files (x86)\Black Isle\ and then the respective version of Baldur's Gate.

My User Account Control is disabled :)

I'll rerun BG-config. I use a Radeon 4870 graphics card.

Sound: Turn off EAX.

It's already turned off. My onboard sound-hardware doesn't have the properties to run EAX.

Thanks for both answers. I really hope I can fix this problem!

EDIT: I fixed the graphic-bug by turning off 3D-accelaration in the config-tool, but the sound-problem persists. Just to update you, this problem is also on the menu-screen: Music works fine, but when I click on a voice preset in the character generator, there is no sound, just as in the game.

UPDATE: Footsteps and clickables make no sound either.

Hmmm, did this get resolved yet? I had a problem like this once with an onboard card, but that was a conflict with a separately inserted one. You might try diasabling the sound device in your control panel and then reanabling it to see if the "refresh" wakes BG up to the fact that the soundcard can do more than just music.

It's beena while since I looked at the sound part of the BG setup utilities, is there a possibility you've turned off sone of those functions in there, or had a mod turn them off somehow?

My weidu.log holds all my mods. Far as I know, none of those should be able to turn the sounds I'm missing off :)

As for the first part, I'll try that, thanks! The issue isn't resolved yet, and it's really bugging me. I'd really, really like to play this game.

The issue has occured before. I found some stuff on the internet. In those cases, turning off Hardware Acceleration in DXDiag solved the issue. Trouble is, Vista supposedly does this automatically, so I can't turn it off manually. I'm really at a loss here.

Here's to hoping someone will have an idea that might fix this.

Ups, posted too early...

... you'll never be able to implement any changes to the programs files(edit them, at least manually). :)

It's because the Vista hides the real files and makes them appear as images in the location, because of the special Vista feature that makes the Read-only flag irremovable in the programs files.

PS: You need to remove the read-only flag from the folder(right click->properties->uncheck Read-only flag). You need to do that only one time... the flag doesn't disappear as it should, but that's just Vista %/#%/% you up.

Breakthrough! Or a breakthrough of sorts, at least...

First, I found that I had this problem not only in Baldur's Gate and Dragonshard, but a similar one in Fallout 3 (I couldn't hear character voices in dialogue).

I thought, okay, let's see where exactly this goes wrong, so I uninstalled the entire installation, determined to walk through the installation bit by bit, to see when the sound would go faulty. With vanilla BG, no TotSC, there was no sound. I pressed "done" anyway, when I had built my trial and error character. On the prologue-screen, I thought I heard something.

Right I was. The voice-volume wasn't gone, it was just turned down very low. Now's the tricky part: Where? The voice-settings are fine in the config, in the game menu, and in Vistas Volume Settings. I'm using a 5.1 system, so I thought: "maybe voices only come from the central speaker, and that's turned down?" It was turned half-way down, but turning it up full didn't help very much.

What the #"&%"&% is the problem? Which system controls can turn down the voice-volume or properties hereof in only some games? Is it my soundcard? Or what? This is driving me crazy, as I now realize it doesn't only affect old games, but also new games like Fallout 3 :)

Jarno: I would do what you suggest, but does that really have an effect on this problem? I mean, everything works perfect, except this sound-crap.

EDIT: Okay, the problem is definetely with my 5.1 sound... Altering the configuration via Vistas utility, I forced my speakers to only play stereo. This solved the problem. It's annoying I can use surround-sound in Fallout 3 though. Beats me what the problem is. Must have a bad port on the sound card or something.

Well, apparently sorted. It might be a faulty port on the soundcard, since Vista's utility makes the sound work again, but I'm still suspicious of the whole "Nothing under Programs Files in Vista is allowed to be modifiied for any reason" thing. When I am eventually forced into Vista, I'll be installing everything to a custom directory.
