Sure. Only thing I’m not sure of is if you have an NPC, level them up and get some abilities from Skills & Abilities, and then use the class-change tome, you might keep the abilities? 

But maybe S&A mostly gives passive bonuses? In which case there would be no problem at all. 

The main advice I have is, use the tome immediately when you re recruit an NPC. Don’t be tempted to change NPCs later on, or change them multiple times in a game. There is a technical issue where, if you use the tome right away, it will remove all your proficiencies and let you choose new ones. But if you add pips in a proficiency and then use the tome, that proficiency becomes indelible and cannot be removed. (This is why it’s not a good idea to use the class-change function with Charname, who will inevitably have lots of indelible proficiencies. (You can use the kit-change function with Charname, though, to do stuff like add a single-class kit to a multiclass character.))

Thanks for the insight. I will follow your advice. When i was on your mods download page, i noticed multiple versions. Which should i install?

I'm playing on a fresh EET install with the 5.9.6 version of this mod. I'm in chateau Irenicus and wanted to change Minsc's proficiencies without changing his class, but immediately encountered 2 problems:

1. Resetting his class removes his ranger proficiency in two-weapon fighting, with no way to get it back. Testing on Khalid shows that changing class to a ranger doesn't give the two-weapon proficiency rangers are supposed to get.

2. The innate ability for assigning proficiencies allows me to put only one point in any weapon and weapon style. I can mitigate this by first using the innate ability and then leveling him up from 0 but he still ends up with 2 points spread between 2 proficiencies when I'd rather put 2 points in one proficiency.

I cannot replicate what you are seeing. I just loaded my savegame from the beginning of Chateau Irenicus and helped Minsc get out of his cage. Then gave him the Tome and selected 'choose new class/stats/kit and level up from 0.' I chose the Ranger class, did not change any stats, and chose the Beast Master kit. Immediately went to the Record screen and he had two pips in dual-wielding. I pressed the level-up button and those two pips were already filled in and did not count against my total:

I spent my other pips, and he leveled up from 0 to 8. Just as an FYI, what happens here is an engine bug: if you level up from 0 to any number higher than 1, then the level-up screen only gives you the pips earned from level 2 to level x. The pips you are supposed to get at level 1 are lost. This is why I give you an innate ability for proficiencies, it gives you those level 1 pips.
So I used that innate ability and I could successively increase Minsc's proficiency in Clubs from proficiency to specialization to mastery:

So Minsc ended up as a level 8 ranger with two pips in dual-wielding and three pips in Clubs and a few other pips elsewhere that I forget.

This all seems to be working as intended? *

* Note, PROSFMAX.2da in my game allows rangers to have three pips in weapons at 8th level. It may be different in your game. The proficiency innate ability is accurate in following the limits set forth in WEAPPROF.2da and PROFSMAX.2da (as those two files are at the time NPC_EE is installed). So different people may see different results when using the ability, but the results should in all cases be correct for their particular game rules.

Since then, I have created a separate tome that allows you to erase and reselect proficiencies without changing your class, kit, or level. It is installed as part of the Scales of Balance 'Combat Skills' component. I should backport that capability to this mod as a 4th option for the Tome... and I will at some point. Real life does not afford much time for such things at the moment.

EDIT - Actually, maybe I can tack proficiency changes onto the non-class-change options without too much difficulty, thanks to this. I’ll see if I can add it.

That's what I did. I chose the option to level up from 0 but since I didn't want to change his class or give him a kit, I just chose plain ranger and built him up from 0, attempting to give him different proficiencies.

WEAPPROF.2da and PROFSMAX.2da in my install look perfectly normal. WEAPPROF.2da has been modified by tweaks anthology universal clubs and some kit additions from mods but that's nothing new or extraordinary.

Something is broken in my install. When I change him to a a paladin the innate ability for assigning proficiencies still only allows me to put one point in every weapon and weapon style. If I first level him up from 0 and then use the innate ability, the proficiencies I gave him from leveling can't be increased with the innate ability. I can only put one point in new proficiencies.

However, changing him to a fighter (any kit) gives very strange results. If, when leveling him up from 0, I put at least 2 points in any weapon proficiency or the dual-wielding style, the innate ability allows me to increase that proficiency to 4 (max for his 7th xp level) or the style to 3. I still can only put 1 point in any other weapon and weapon style.

Edit: Actually, putting 2 points in any proficiency seems to work for any class in allowing to increase that proficiency with the innate ability, provided the class/kit restrictions allow more than 2 points in that proficiency.

Looks like an NPC mod with those RH#ADR and RH#ADR25 file names. Scan the list ... Adrian. According to your log, the sorcerer version. The creature file appears to be perfectly well-formed, nothing really out of the ordinary. Except that it's a sorcerer, and none of the vanilla NPCs in BG2(EE) are sorcerers.

Though it also looks like Adrian is the last NPC, so maybe it could also have to do with Adrian being the last installed NPC, if the last member is patched differently than the others.

I’ve got Adrian installed as a sorcerer in my current game and there were no problems installing NPC_EE. So that’s not the whole story. 

I can’t quite see what the problem is from the .debug snippet. This mod only touches .CRE files in two instances: 1) to make their proficiencies removable, and 2) a simple ADD_CRE_ITEM to give them the class-change Tome. I suspect the error here is with the former… still doesn’t make sense though. Unless some other mod changes the .CRE file?

Don’t even remove the mod. Just remove those two .CRE files from your override folder, then install NPC_EE, then put those two files back. You’ll never notice the difference. 

We won’t figure out the cause of the error, but at least you’ll be able to play the game without any more mod reinstalls…

Got it, I'll try that. I assume I need to uninstall D2K and EEUITweaks temporarily on the way there?

EDIT: Looks like it's unnecessary, D2K re-installs automatically. Thanks. :]
