My latest super-modded EET game - with more IWD

With new mod releases - from myself and others - I have decided to put together a new install. As usual, I am getting progressively more aggressive with these installs. I think my last one was about 650 installed mod components? This one weighs in at 695.

EDIT - with some mod updates, I am putting together a new install. Trying something different this time, really hewing to category groupings to a greater extent. TBH I'm not sure that is the best idea? It looks nice and clean when laid out like this, but I'm worried there are little non-obvious quirks and dependencies that don't care about elegance. And of course, within categories I am not 100% sure of the order. I'm good with items/spells/kits/tweaks, but NPC mods are still a big mystery to me. Very roughly, I tried to install them in chronological order of their creation, on the assumption that newer ones will more likely contain cross-mod content with older ones. But that's a big assumption that may not hold.

At any rate, a couple notes on this install, as usual:

  • The bulk of Item Revisions (everything after Store Revisions) should go before Faiths & Powers if you use the normal version or IR or if you use IRR. But if you use my updated branch, as of 4b10sd19 it can be installed later, near CDTweaks.
  • I moved aTweaks Scroll Scribing waaaay early, when I saw that Brandock has some particular coding that only kicks in of he is installed after aTweaks. But it is crazy to install an NPC after the usual aTweaks spot (after SCS, after EET_end), so I moved the aTweaks component earlier. I'm not sure that's a good idea - that means it is installed before any spell mods? Does aTweaks Scroll Scribing need to know about all spell mods at install-time? I don't know, I haven't looked at the code. But, in gameplay I rarely use that ability anyway. So if it is screwy it's not a huge deal. This can be an experiment.
  • I dumped Transitions (tired of the risk it introduces, and not actually sure what I lose by removing it - I guess I will see) and NTotSC (the new rebalanced version is better... but still not great). I added Gorgon's Eye, Black Hearts, and Lava's Ravenloft mods.
  • A bunch of IWD mods were not quite working last game... I have made more tweaks to the installers and I think they should be good now.
  • I'm not ready to jump to SCS v35 - it has a lot of new features and therefore a lot of kinks to work out. Heck, I'm stuck playing on BG2EE v2.5, I'm not even sure SCS v35 works on the 2.5 patch. So, for now at least, I'm sticking with the fairly rock-solid v33.4. (But 33.4 does not work with the 2.6 patch, so this is not an option for most folks.)

Lots of fun new stuff. As usual, in the last year Lava has released a couple new adventures. And I still have yet to play Black Hearts in BGEE which I am excited about. Among my own new stuff I have a new cantrip system that seems super cool, and new handling for MR that should make it less annoying without needing to totally axe it from the game.

Also, excitingly: I have managed to get several IWD mods into this beast! The original suite of 5 NPCs, plus the Turald, Cassia, and Kahiri mods are here. They are all in Easthaven, but I have not taken any into my party yet. Any recommendations? Does it make sense to break up the original IWDNPC party and include Turald/Cassia/Kahiri? Or would that just end up removing a lot of their interactions? If anyone has any experience with these NPCs as to which ones I could include to make a fun party, I would love to hear about it.

It's been a loooooong time since I played IWD and could mod it. Endearingly, the IWDNPC mod is working with the same bug I remember from all those years ago:

I hope that means it will work in this EET version as well as it does in IWDEE. But I haven't recruited anyone yet. The first thing I did, alone, was venture into Griselda's basement. And that extermination mission turned out to be much more daunting than I remember:

Each beetle takes 30 hp of damage before dying! This creature must have escaped my mod that adjusts IWD down to something you start at 1st level. Whoops! And, my Magic Bolt cantrip is bugged, so i couldn't even take them out with missile weapons. Luckily, though they are super tanky, they cannot hit the broad side of a barn. So I survive and score a level-up. because, the prospect of playing with NPCs makes for an intriguing possibility: I can go around Easthaven doing these quests for people, and keep all that juicy Quest XP for myself! I quickly hit level 2 this way. Unfortunately, Elisia did not recognize me as a bard - the IWD-focused code in Might & Guile must not have worked with this version of the game. :(

Anyway, so here I am, a level 2 fighter/mage Skald, ready to recruit 5 companions and head into the Orc Cave. Like I say if anyone has any input about who to take into the party I would love it. And then I'll get moving.

  1. All the quest mods prior to arestorationp; why are they there?
  2. How have you found transitions? Are you expecting to have to console through the odd issue?
  3. Tell me more about Z_HASTE_FIX.TP2; is this a candidate for inclusion in one of your mods?

Oh I plan to do an EET Candlekeep-through-Tree-of-Life run sometime soon. This isn’t just for IWD. Maybe I’ll give IWD2 another chance as well. I want All The Mods and All The Games in this install so I can just use this one app to play whatever Infinity Engine thing I feel like playing. (And I won’t get into my secret plan to convert PS:T into an SoA expansion, replacing ToB :beholder: )

Meantime, there are several mods for IWD out there that I’ve never been able to use, and it goes pretty quick, and it is a good game for testing my mods. So I’ll start there.

Last time there were some compatibility issues between it and EndlessBG1, and TBH it was hard for me to know what stuff was from what mod. That transition to SoD was a bit chaotic. But warts and all, I do think it was better than a time-skip straight to Korlasz’ dungeon! So for me, one or both of those are a keeper. I think this install should smooth things out.

SR Haste has some slightly thorny issues, as described here. The mod is contemplating changes, as described in that thread. Meantime, this is my attempt to make it work seamlessly. All versions of Haste-type spells and items use op176 to SET movement to 15, rather than increasing your speed, so any op176 effects will not double up. The exception is Boots of Speed which use op16 “weak haste.” And all such sources are designed such that the op176 effects  and op16 effects should never be applied simultaneously. I’ll use this install to test the system, and if it works well I’ll integrate into a mod or maybe even make it a candidate for default SR behavior. 

EDIT - having re-read that Haste thread, this solution that I quickly wrote up at 2am is probably not ideal. I will probably change it.

Presumably, at some point some years ago I read someone say that that is where arestorationp should be placed. On the assumption that they knew what they were talking about, and given that I had no clue about it, I put it in this place and that's where I have had it ever since.

I would love to know where this "generally recommended" thing about ub and arestorationp is.  And if there are other such general recommendations. Because clearly I lack some information in this regard.

Incidentally, what I did to make the IWDNPC, Kahiri, Cassia, and Turald mods work with IWD1_EET is not very complicated:

1) Add this somewhere near the beginning of the .tp2 file:

That is... more or less all that needs to be done! Note there are one or two instances in BAF files where it does not reference the area itself, but a structure within the .ARE file. Like tipun's IWD mod might change IWD's AR2000 into ID2000, but the area might still have a door called AR2000 inside it. From what I could see, this is pretty obvious because the script would have something like See(DOOR,AR2000) instead of the usual AreaCheck(AR2000). Something to keep an eye out for, but very rare from what I could tell.

I'm sure some other IWD mods may be more complicated, and maybe have other stuff like chapter checks (which would not work in the EET version). But these four NPC mods, at least, seem fairly simple in this regard. If the maintainers of these mods would like to add this compatibility I am happy to help. And this can serve as a first test run.

Did you install  I4E's Sod components that "early" for any particular reason as it is recommended from the readme to install I4E's Sod components later...?

Recap: I posted weidu.logs four times in the last two years, and you said precisely nothing in all that time. Then two weeks ago I put together another install because I wanted to add IWD mods. Having heard nothing about install order, I saved time by using folder with quest and NPC mods already installed. I’ve played through the game and experienced no bugs; why change it?

Then you post a bunch of complaints, demanding that I sort through needless invective to find “suggestions” hidden inside, like some kind of cereal box toy. And now you ask “why didn’t you incorporate two weeks ago what I only told you yesterday????”

Nope, almost certainly an oversight. I am bumbling along like everyone else. And as I say, in this instance I literally did not give any thought to the first half of the order, but just reused what I had already done a year ago. (As Jastey admitted, some mods did not have any install order information back then, it was only added more recently.) Last time I played it was basically fine, so I trusted what older me had done. Apparently, older me is a vicious backstabber who is not to be trusted :laugh:

Sigh. I used to be able to look at the Big World Guide and it would explain all this stuff. Now... where can players go to get find solid information about this stuff.

At any rate, one solution is to post stuff and have other players note any mistakes. This is good! Because it will improve prescribed orders over time and more more information public. So if you see anything else you think is suboptimal, please note it! Just, try not to adopt Jastey's shitty attitude when you do. ;)

It comes from SHS Forum but I didn't kept the exact sentence from Almateria answering to the question about install order. In substance, he said that he would install "Almateria's Restoration Project" after UB (he created his mod with UB in mind and tested it with UB...). IMHO, il was more like a suggestion than a strong recommendation.

Welp, I hit a pretty early roadblock with the IWDNPCs mod. When talking to Apsel after dispatching the wolf in his shop, Teri and Severn interjected and caused an infinite loop. I had to manually shut down the app and reload a save. I did it again and left them inside the shop, and then I could get the reward. After, I talked to Hrothgar, then move toward the orc cave. When I was stopped by Damien and alerted to goblins, the dialogue again entered an infinite loop and stopped me form playing. I wasn't expecting it; and I am not in the habit of quicksaving before each time I talk to anyone, so I had to reload the same earlier save - and this time, because the whole party is outside and Damien is scripted to force conversation, there is no simple workaround. I'm not sure I want to get too investing in playing this campaign if I never know when a showstopping dialogue bug will hit...

The big question is why this is happening. I installed IWDNPC on IWDEE and the dialogues look different. EDIT - a bit of closer inspection reveals that the mod added the interjection again, as a new response after it had already happened. So it keeps cycling. I removed the spurious responses in NI and the dialogues seem to work fine now. But I don't understand why they were there. On IWDEE only the first instance of the interjection happens. I am not familiar enough with dialogue-editing .tp2 code to understand how the interjection was inserted and how it could have gone wrong...

So I have found more looping dialogues. I am getting a decent sense of how this is happening. First, the IWDNPC mod inserts an interjection into a dialogue, based on the NPC being available to speak. This is added to State 10 in Edion's .DLG:

I cannot see how or why an interjection is added to State 31 of Edion's .DLG.

I have found roughly 135 dialogues that have this problem. It's not too hard to remove the looping interjections, but it has to be done manually and it takes a few minutes for each file. Very annoying.

I'll tag @CamDawg for I think being the latest maintainer to update the IWDNPC mod. I suppose I can post this over at Pocketplane as well, in case anyone over there is interested and/or knowledgeable. (And, in case anyone is actually over there.) I know this is a non-supported installation and the will to update the mod may not be there. But if there is some desire to do it, I have a game instance with EET and IWD1_EET having just been installed and IWDNPC in place ready to go. So I can test without too much trouble, if it would be useful.
