Polytweak, initial release

Recommended Posts

Well the days have a way of turning into weeks, then months, I'm finally on the verge of releasing version 3 though, the breakdown is as follows:

  • Class & kit changes - done
  • Item changes - done
  • Spell changes - 90% done
  • Mindflayers - done
  • Golems - done
  • Beholders - in progress, more than 50% done
  • Other creature changes - bout the same as the beholders

Now I just need to package it all and iron out the parse errors etc. Creature changes will now be grouped under one installation option (it's too long and messy otherwise - there's too many interdependent files)

I won't post the full readme until I'm ready to release it, but I'll note a few things here.

Regarding the berserker's rage, I eventually went with bonus hp of 5, 10, 15 and 20 at levels 1, 6, 12 and 18, usual immunity to mind affecting magic, +1 AC, +1 attacks per round and a cumulative 15% chance per round of losing control for one round, starting from the fifth round (with a 75% chance maximum). Can be ended at will if not uncontrollable, with the berserker automatically slowed for 1 round (ignoring free action) after snapping out of his rage, losing the excess hp (falling unconscious if brought to zero) and taking -1 penalties to THAC0 and AC for 5 rounds. Since kensai gets a plain damage bonus and barbarian a strength bonus during rage, giving the berserker an APR bonus seemed the most appropriate - it does make dual wielding a little unnecessary though and instead pushes this kit toward shield use, which doesn't seem right for a berserker. I could always make shields unusable by them.

Testing a solo (pre HLA) berserker in some random melee heavy battles like House Jae'llat, ToB oasis and Karashur in WK shows that even with the chance of losing control he's still better off than the other warrior kits and monk regardless of my changes to them (Karashur and his devils always kill them).

Speaking of the kensai I've made a few tweaks to this kit as well, the kai ability now lasts one extra round per 5 levels (maximum 4 rounds) since it tends to be overshadowed by HLAs and it applies a zero-duration luck penalty (opcode 133) as a "melee hit effect" - since melee hit effects are added to the block before weapon effects this means that when using kai they will inflict maximum elemental damage when wielding a weapon with this property. Here for instance the kensai always does an extra 6 damage with Spectral Brand (normally 1d6):

Spell changes; some spells and abilities deal sonic or force damage, which was just implemented as "magic" damage in the vanilla game, but since that's now reserved for necromancy spells (with some spells specifically protecting from it) I needed to find a replacement.

Crushing damage is the obvious substitute, but it is blocked by stoneskin - I've found a way to make it ignore stoneskin though, by applying it as an EFF through opcode 272 (once only), so Lance of Disruption for instance - the Skull Trap replacement - can affect stoneskinned/ironskinned creatures (like this druid).

Concerning beholders, I think I've finally realized why they seem broken and too luck-based in vanilla: Their most deadly rays (Disintegrate and Flesh to Stone) are supposed to have a very short range, which wasn't implemented in game. I could have scripted them to only use these powers at touch range, but I didn't see what benefit it would add to gameplay except forcing the use of ranged weapons vs beholders (tedious), so instead I replaced these with a poison ray and level-draining "Enervation" ray (level drain is very dangerous though because of the beholder's Death Spell ray), I also added a "Shatter" ray so that they have a means of damaging summoned skeleton warriors or golems. Beholders are also now briefly protected from magic while using their Anti Magic ray (AoE bombardment was the way to go usually).

Great work you have going here. I really like the berserker rage change. I never understood in what way the effect could described as "berserk" when they are in complete control of their faculties the whole time. (Also never understood how a fighter whose defining tactic is to go berserk would have the patience and discipline to become a grandmaster with a weapon - my mod limits them to 3 stars.)

I look forward to getting my grubby hands on this. I want to see how compatible it is with my mod - my berserker kit characteristics with your berserk rage ability, my revised Kensai with your revised Kai ability, etc.

Some Spectral Trolls don't need fire or acid to die, some do. I was unable to reproduce chunking of Spectral Troll in Druid grove area - they all died normally (and appeared at night only).

I assume you had the Flail of Ages by the time you reached the druid grove, were you hitting them with that? It's intentional that a troll who takes fire/acid damage in the round before dying will not become a "downed troll" who requires finishing off.

I don't quite understand this statement... Does that means that in that case (if they take fire/acid damage in the round before dying) they need not to be finished after being *downed* and die instantly? Or if you hit them with FoA all the way (and they took those fire/acid damage each round) they will became *immortal* and could not be finished (as they will not become a *downed trolls* who requires finishing off)? If the former then they should not be a threat if fought with FoA (and this is not true at least in my current walkthough as I have experienced an *immortal* Snow Troll in the Planar Sphere whom I have fought all alone and only with FoA). If the latter then it seems a bit strange to me... From my point of view the developers put FoA in De'Arnise Keep intentionally as the tool to *fight* the trolls who occupied it, not only to *finish* them off after smashing them down with some other weapon. So the questions - which assumption is true and whose was that intention?

Correct, if they have taken fire or acid damage in the past 1 round (by default six seconds) a timer ensures that the troll just dies and for simplicity's sake does not spawn a new 'downed' troll. This makes battles with trolls much faster.

Turns out the planar sphere snow troll isn't affected by my mod at all, so his unwillingness to die is actually just vanilla troll bugginess (which the improved troll component aims to prevent).

He should have been included in the trolls component, but I made a mistake and wrote OBSICE04 (actually a mountain bear, an apparently unused creature) rather than OBSICE01, the correct creature file.

COPY_EXISTING ~trolsn01.cre~ ~override~ //Snow trolls, don't ask me why I bother with
                              ~trolsn02.cre~ ~override~ //this rare and trivial creature...
                              ~obsice04.cre~ ~override~ //Planar sphere snow troll

hey, any chance you could make a tactical component for the master brain inside the mind flayer lair?

I could be using revised battles, that actually touches it and makes it a bit better, but asking you could be a good thing as well. Up to you :D

Another thing. There is a weird bug if you reload a save where you got a troll killed in the same "level". The troll gets up, then he goes down. The animation seems stuck doing that.

I think the only real way to fix that is to remove the creature after a bit, as the animation that's the reload starts is the death animation and yes, that's the only animation the whole creature actually has... I would also remember that also some of the other creatures actually visibly shifter while they are down when loaded from a save they have been killed in. Fortunately none of them re-explode ... :D

Hi,

I've been trying out the improved trolls component of your mod. Mainly for the spirit trolls flickering fix.

I've just entered the De'Arnise keep and have noticed a few problems. The first troll I killed is flickering between lying down and standing up, even though it's dead. It does this even on a reload.

Another issue is that the animations and combat log tell me trolls are dead (and gives me XP) even if I haven't used fire/acid on them, then they get resurrected. It's a bit confusing, and also cancels spell targeting (so if I was about to finish off a troll with an acid arrow, and then he gets killed by normal damage, I lose the spell but the troll comes back to life). Is this working as intended?

Finally, is there any way to disable this component while keeping the spirit trolls fix?

Here's my weidu log in case there's some conflict:

edit: I notice that polytope hasn't been active on these forums for a while, does anyone else know how I can isolate the spirit troll fix and disable the rest of this component?

Finally, is there any way to disable this component while keeping the spirit trolls fix?

Which features do you exactly refer to ? As the "fix"...

//the particular code touching the spirit trolls ...copied here so I don't need to reopen the file... just answer the above question by defining what the "fix" is.

Hi!

The 'fix' I was referring to is from this part of the readme:

Vanilla game spirit trolls had claws which work like the Staff of the Magi, i.e. granting invisibility on equip, this interacts badly with SCS melee scripting because the troll "equips" their claws before attacking (and thus becomes invisible) several times per round. Their invisibility is now applied by script and less frequently, they also drain more strength per hit, but only by their claws (not their bite) and for a shorter time.

With SCS, spirit trolls go invisible many times per round, and even spells like True Sight don't prevent this. It makes them too difficult for my low-level party.

The part I would like to disable is this:

The behaviour of trolls in the vanilla game (i.e. often "forgetting" to die while in combat and being unable to die while webbed) makes battles with trolls unnecessarily long and full of micromanagement and is a source of frustration to many players including myself. This component allows trolls to be killed directly, providing fire or acid is used...

Which is a cool feature, but seems to be occasionally buggy.
