Some more issues:

  1. All Shields crash the game! I managed to equip Sir Trun's shield to Montaron, but after that, and shield I click on causes a crash.
  2. Jaheira knows several level 3 spells with no icon:
    • Cloak of Darkness
    • Murderous Command
    • Stone Fist

Can anyone (@subtledoctor?) help me work out why my Bastard Swords are in the Mace/Morning Star category and look like maces on the paperdoll/avatar?

That happened to me a while ago!  But I don't remember what it was.  And it hasn't been happening recently.

Glancing at a few things, it seems there might be something to do with Faiths & Powers' revised item usability.  Did you install Item Revisions after it?  IR changes some paperdoll graphics, right?

EDIT - I just did a test, with FnP and then IR afterward, and bastard swords looked okay.  So it's something else.  Do you have a mod that changes the appearance of morning stars?  (Are you still using the mod list mentioned in the first post?)

EDIT 2 - sorry, my test was wrong.  I just pinned it down to installing IR "Weapon Changes" after FnP "Alter Item Usability and Proficiency."  I haven't been installing IR Weapon Changes lately, so I didn't see this recently.

Solutions, at the moment:

  1. Move IR Weapon Changes forward to before FnP, or in the middle of FnP before Altered Usability & Proficiency.
  2. Move FnP Altered Usability & Proficiency later.  It can be moved back to the beginning of FnP Multiclass.  It might be able to be installed after FnP Multiclass.  Theoretically, based on the way I designed it, that should work.  But, I've never tested it in that order, I always figured on keeping things together for the sake of simplicity.

No idea about that one.

Yeah, those are some of Grammarsalad's new spells, but we need to source icons for them.  I've been meaning to add some recolored versions of existing icons, but haven't had the time lately.

See my edited post above.  It's [FnP Item Usability --> IR Weapon Changes].  Need to change their order, or omit one.

I think I can move IR. My order currently goes:

  • item_rev:0:Item Revisions by Demivrgvs
  • (some other stuff that is recommended after IR)
  • Faiths_and_Powers:21:FnP: the Faiths & Powers original sphere system
  • Faiths_and_Powers:31:Install Cleric kits
  • Faiths_and_Powers:33:Install Druid kits
  • Faiths_and_Powers:35:Install Paladin kits
  • Faiths_and_Powers:37:Install Ranger kits
  • Faiths_and_Powers:75:Alter weapon usability and proficiency

So which components from this list (if any) do you think need to go before the rest of IR?

  1. Jaheira knows several level 3 spells with no icon:
    • Cloak of Darkness
    • Murderous Command
    • Stone Fist

Yeah, those are some of Grammarsalad's new spells, but we need to source icons for them.  I've been meaning to add some recolored versions of existing icons, but haven't had the time lately.

Good to know, ta.

In that case, if it's not too much trouble to split up FnP,  I would set the order as so:

  • Quote
    • item_rev:0:Item Revisions by Demivrgvs
    • (some other stuff that is recommended after IR)
    • item_rev:1030:Store Revisions
    • item_rev:10:Revised Shield Bonuses
    • item_rev:17:Weapon Changes
    • Faiths_and_Powers:21:FnP: the Faiths & Powers original sphere system

In other words, just move IR components 1030, 10, and 17 forward to before FnP.  If you had more mods that might add weapons to the game, this might be less ideal; any such weapons would not be affected by the IR component.  But given your mod list, this should be fine - FnP/MnG don't add any such weapons. (Even if they did, it might be worth it - one or two morning stars that do 2d4 damage instead of 1d6+1, or the rare made that does 1d6+1 instead of 2d3, would not be the end of thje world.  You might not even notice.  I was always a bit critical of Roxanne for insisting that her NPC mod be installed last, for this reason - none of her items would be affected by universal tweaks like IR or CDTweaks etc.  But the same thing applies - one or two weapon behaving ever so slightly different is not the end of the world.)

Technical explanation for this (skip everything that follows if you don't care how the IE engine and modding works!):

Spoiler

The way FnP allows weapon usability on a per-kit basis for ~75 different kits, when there are only six cleric and druid kit flags, is to use opcode 181 for each kit to limit weapons by "item type."  Another way to do it would be to add opcode 319 equipping effects for each barred kit to every weapon.  We settled on opcode 181 because a) using opcode 319 would miss any weapons added later than FnP, while using opcode 181 would capture all weapons added at any time; and b) at the time, the EE engine suffered some serious issues with lagging/freezing in the inventory screen.  There was some initial evidence that it was related to the way the new engine highlights party member portraits who can and cannot use a selected item.  We were afraid that this could be made a lot worse if we added dozens or even hundreds of equipping effects that would have to be analyzed by the engine every time you merely touch an item in your inventory.  Fast forward, and we later found out that the lag issue was unrelated, and it was basically fixed in a later patch, and now mods like Deities of Faerun use opcode 319 in this way with no ill effects - though it is still subject to problem a) described above.  So our decision was based partially on fears that that later turned out to be incorrect.  But I still think that it was at the time - and still it - a reasonable way to do it.

(We considered just letting clerics equip any weapon, and only restricting proficiencies, but in the base game usability and proficiency are always tied together, and here they still would be for thieves and wizards, so we decided to forge ahead and apply usability restrictions.)

So, what complicates the use of opcode 181 and item types for use restrictions, is that while most weapons have an item type that corresponds with their proficiency, some do not.

  • clubs and maces share the "maces" type, #17
  • there is an unused "clubs" item type, #44 - but see below
  • short swords, wakizashis, and ninja-tos all share the "small swords" item type #19
  • long swords, bastard swords, katanas, scimitars, and 2-handed swords all share the same "large swords" item type #20 (!!)
  • there is an unused "greatswords" item type, #57
  • there is an unused "bastard swords" item type, #69
  • item types higher than 30 cannot be dual-wielded

So in order to use opcode 181, we need to separate every item type that one kit might be able to use and another kit might not be able to use - ideally, have a distinct item type corresponding to each weapon proficiency.  AND we need to make sure that all 1-handed weapons use an item type lower than 31.  So FnP makes the following changes:

  • Change halberds to item type #69 (originally "bastard swords," but unused in the game) because dual-wielding doesn't matter for halberds.  Now the "halberds" item type (#30) is free for use by a 1-handed item.
  • Change spears to item type #44 (originally "clubs," but unused in the game).  Now the "spears" item type (#29) is free for use by a 1-handed item.
  • Change 2-handed swords to item type #57 ("greatswords") because that's what they are, and dual-wielding doesn't matter.
  • Change katanas to item type #30 (formerly "halberds") to differentiate them from other "large swords."
  • Change scimitars to item type #29 (formerly "spears") to differentiate them from other "large swords."
  • Depending on other mods, ninja-tos will either be in the scimitars or small swords category.  (They share proficiency with scimitars in the base game, but IR changes them to the short sword proficiency.)
  • Now swords with the short sword proficiency have the "small swords" item type all to themselves!
  • Depending on other mods, wakizashi will either be in the katanas or scimitars category. (They share proficiency with scimitars in the base game, but IR changes them to the katana proficiency.)
  • Depending on other mods, change morning stars to the "flails" item type or the "maces" item type. (They share proficiency with flails in the base game, but IR and/or CDTweaks can change them to the mace proficiency.  Either way, the 3 item types only have 2 proficiencies, so we can consolidate them.)
  • Change bastard swords to the "morning stars" item type.
  • Now long swords have the "large swords" item type all to themselves!
  • What's left are clubs, which share are item type with maces but have a distinct proficiency.  Since some kits (druids) can use clubs but not maces, we want to change that.  I could not imagine any priest kit that cannot use both clubs and staves, so we changed clubs to the "quarterstaff" item type.  (Historical footnote, IRC Raduziel objected to this combination, and is one of the reasons he broke off and made Deities of Faerun kits incompatible with FnP, writing his own item usability code and eventually adding his own sphere system.)

With that done, any FnP kit can define its weapon usability and proficiency level by setting simple variables, which get applied by a function I wrote into the mod.  It is SUPER flexible and useful.  But, it requires these item type changes.

tl;dr: Two things should probably happen:

  1. Mods that make changes to categories of items (e.g. IR, Tweaks proficiency changes) should be installed before FnP
  2. Mods that make changes to categories of weapons should generally use proficiency, not item type, to distinguish them.

Maybe I'll take a look at the IR code and change it to use proficiency instead of item type - or even leave it to continue using item type, but add some compatibility code to handle bastard swords in case FnP is already installed.  Should be quite easy, and then I'll submit the result to @Mike1072 in Github.  But in the meantime, just install IR weapon changes before FnP.

All of those should be installed before FnP.  Moving IR to just in front of FnP should be fine.

Excellent, no issue with that. I have some other stuff that adds items, but it's way before FnP and mostly before IR.

I have plenty more, they are just way earlier in my sequence and didn't look like they would affect proficiency or types.

I was going to ask what prevents DoF, FnP and DR from merging! My assumption was that it would be a mix of creative differences and respect for the work of inactive modders.

As someone primarily interested in actually playing the game (heresy I know), I want the maximum possible compatibility and consolidation of mods, but recognise that it often won't happen for various reasons.

To be fair, FnP and DR are partially "merged," which is to say they are fairly compatible with each other.  All DR kits are recognized by the FnP sphere system as long as DR is installed first.  I used my judgment in assigning spheres and item use; that's why, e.g. the DR Feywarden of Corellon acts like a fairly basic cleric with only DR installed, but can specialize in swords and bows if you add FnP.  If Camdawg or anyone else maintaining DR wants to exercise independent judgment and have DR itself assign FnP spheres and item use to its kits, I have a function prepared that allows other modders to do that.  (Bonus, if DR used that function, then DR kits could be installed after FnP, not that it really matters.)

Of course DR has its own sphere system.  Honestly the main reason I made the FnP sphere system is because the DR system didn't work at the time and I wasn't qualified to fix it.  (It also, AFAIK, is not quite as flexible as the FnP system in multiple different user-configurable sphere systems.)  And Camdawg also created a function that can be used to allow FnP kits to hook into the DR sphere system.  It would be a fair amount of work to assign DR spheres for the 100+ kits in FnP... but I would certainly do it to maximize compatibility.  It's just a low priority because 1) I'm still not entirely sure the DR system is working at the moment, and 2) I have not heard from any players who want to use FnP kits with the DR spheres.  (And of course, we can actually replicate the DR spheres within the FnP system; arguably that would be a better way to achieve "compatibility."  It's certainly worth a conversation if there is any appetite for going in that direction.)

DoF is a different story.  I understand its sphere system has been made a bit more extensible lately.  Certainly DoF kits could use the function I made to hook into the FnP sphere system(s), though again it would be a lot of work.  And FnP kits might be able to hook into the DoF system.  But, last I heard, DoF's item usability restrictions are bound up entirely with the DoF kits - they are unshakeable kit features, unlike the spheres.  In FnP we spun the item usability off as a separate component.  So if you added FnP or DR kits to DoF, they would be odd ducks out, with vanilla cleric weapon usability.  And if you added DoF kits to FnP, they might bring over their usability changes, which would either cause problems or stick out like a sore thumb.

I'd much prefer to be working with Raduziel, and not duplicating efforts making slightly different versions of the same kits.  Like I say, we can now recreate the DoF spheres within the FnP system.  I could probably make the weapon usability code similarly flexible (actually it might be already).  Very very theoretically, he could pick up all the DoF kits and move them into FnP, and then we could proceed with a unified project.  But, I don't think that's very realistic - DoF is his baby and he is entirely justified in wanting to continue working on it as he created it.  It would be nice if the FnP druid/ranger/paladin kits could be used alongside the DoF cleric kits; I completely respect any player who wants to use DoF clerics instead of ours, but DoF has no druids/rangers/paladins (yet).  Unfortunately the mods just aren't quite in shape to make that combination possible.

(NOTE - some of Raduziel's other kits, like the cleric/druid/paladin/ranger in his "I Hate Undead" mod, are not as locked in to the DpF systems as the DoF clerics are.  The "I Hate Undead" kits are compatible with FnP.)

Yup, I want the same thing.  I try to make it happen where I can.

I think the ideal would be a single class overhaul mod that made all of the underpinning usability, class and sphere changes (FnP? Maybe a merge of that, MnG + SoB?) and had a framework to allow other modders to create classes. If the classes or sphere systems could then be either components of the main mod (maintenance issues), or seperate mods that required it (probably easier), that would let a player pick which kits should be available, and ensure compatibility.
